Hayao Miyazaki created movies like Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro. Now you can see his brilliant, early film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind free online - it's about a biotech war, millennia after an eco-catastrophe.

a manga animated film.
Nausicaä is a young warrior from a small tribe that draws its technologies from nature without killing anything. But another group of humans wants to revive an old bioweapon that destroyed the planet, so Nausicaä has to marshal her forces - including giant insects - to save the world.

imdb listing: Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind [aka "Warriors of the Wind" - USA] (1984)

interesting if you are looking to watch a post apocalyptic film.

What a coincidence! I'm actually just now re-watching this film for the first time. It's my second favorite Miyazaki movie after Princess Mononoke. It's really beautiful, has a great story, and good action scenes.

Of curse they cut about 20 minutes out of the U.S. version; and in a way tweaked the message of the film in the U.S. dub as a result to boot; but yeah, It's one of his best (imo).

Disney re-released it not that long ago, and IIRC it wasn't cut at all. I have a copy somewhere, and I think it even includes the original Japanese.
English dub even has Patrick Stewart.

And yes, Miyazaki is one of my all-time favourites. Nausicaa, Spirited Away and Totoro never leave my bookshelf.

It goes without saying that every Miyazaki movie is worth your time, but I have to admit that after seeing Mononoke, which deals with the same themes, Nausicaä feels terribly naive and simplistic.

That's right. The original Warriors of the Wind dub was disappointing, but the John Lasseter-produced dub that came along more recently is far more faithful to the original.

Though I wish that when they'd done the new English dub, they'd replaced the crude '80s-anime sound effects with something more sophisticated. I like the movie, but those sound effects undermine the experience for me.

Actually, yes, I'm aware of that and have the Disney r-release (with the 20 minutes back in); but the re-dub kept the original Japanse (translated) title: Nausica of the Valley of Wind.

I had assumed he was talking about the 1984 first version Warriors of the Wind (which is still around); and I thought that was the version he had seen.

I watched it a few years back, I think I got lost after about 10 minutes and had no idea what the feck was going on. Can't say I'm a huge fan of Miyazaki.

It only really perked my interest when I'd hear the voices of Captain Picard and Admiral Adama coming from some characters mouths :)
