National TV Awards sketch

I just watched the intro to the Oscars, very fimilar.

replace movies with TV shows, and DeLorean with TARDIS.

No wins? Lame!

Though I'm still holding out hope it'll pull off another Hugo this year.

As for the ratings, I wouldn't be surprised if the ratings had dropped a bit. I'm sure a lot of Tennant fangirls bailed after the regen.

First time it hasn't won since 2005 when it was brought back. Not surprising to me at least...

Don't read anything into that. No one passed a law saying it has to win every year, you know.

No, I'm pretty sure it does. It's in the Shadow Proclamation somewhere. I expect the awards voters to be arrested by the Judoon at any moment.

The skit was cool - I still say it would be unthinkable for, say, NBC to to promote Glee in this way. Or CBS promote Jay Leno or something.

Closest they ever came was during the 2010 Super Bowl when Jay Leno appeared on a CBS ad for Late Show with David Letterman. Leno, Letterman, & Oprah Winfrey all sit uncomfortably together on a couch.
Letterman: "This is the worst Super Bowl party ever."
Leno: "Is that because I'm here?"
Letterman: (mocking) "'Is that because I'm here?'"

Then the NFL put together a massive ad for this year's Super Bowl digitally altering old sitcom footage from dozens of different shows from at least 5 different studios so that the various characters would be wearing football jerseys. (My 1st thought after seeing it was, "That was totally awesome!" My 2nd thought was, "That must have been a nightmare to clear all of that footage!")

But I think series 5 recieved its lowest ratings since nuWho began. So I will read into it a bit....

Actually taking only they thirteen episodes that make up the main run of the series the average ratings were:

Series 1: 7.95m
Series 2: 7.71m
Series 3: 7.55m
Series 4: 8.05m
Series 5: 7.80m

Which would put Series Five right slap bang in the middle with Series One and Four out performing it.

If we add the Christmas Specials (with The Christmas Invasion being counted with Series Two) and the Specials (The Next Doctor to The End of Time, Part Two) we get:

Series 1: 7.95m
Series 2: 7.87m
Series 3: 7.67m
Series 4: 8.42m
Specials: 11.45m
Series 5: 8.02m

Which places Series Five as the third most popular (or second most popular if you want to count Series Four and the Specials as a single series which would average out at 9.94m)

Okay, you might not agree with my placement of the Christmas Specials, so let's try it with The Christmas Invasion as part of Series One, The Runaway Bride as part of Series Two... The Next Doctor as part of Series Four and The Specials consisting of Planet of the Dead to The End of Time, Part Two...

Series 1: 8.08m
Series 2: 7.83m
Series 3: 7.96m
Series 4: 8.41m
Specials: 11.04m
Series 5: 8.02m

I presume in those 2nd & 3rd groupings you include "A Christmas Carol" as part of Season 5?

Personally, I'm stunned that the Christmas specials have such massive spikes in ratings, particularly since I think most of them are very weak when compared with the rest of the series. "A Christmas Carol" is the 1st one that didn't strike me as just frustratingly middle of the road. I guess it just goes to show how much of a cultural institution Doctor Who is in the U.K. I can't ever imagine an American sci-fi show pulling in proportionally comparable numbers.

Even if we go by individual episodes the lowest rating episode of Series Five was The Lodger with 6.44m viewers which is higher than The Satan Pit with 6.08m, Silence in the Library with 6.27m and The Impossible Planet's 6.32m.

Interesting because these are some of the best episodes of those respective seasons. What were the lowest rated episodes of Seasons 1 & 3, pray tell?

On the ratings front worth adding that Who was the most downloaded show on iplayer last year apparently...

Series 5 was okay, but I really think Moffat made a mistake making a clean break. I understand why, but I do find him ignoring the Tenth/Ninth Doctor periods a bit shitty, though he made efforts to do it with the crack and not having many episodes on current day Earth.

To some extent, I don't think RTD gave him much choice. Normally continuity is maintained between Doctors by having companions that continue from one Doctor to the next. Tennant didn't have any regular companions during his last 4 specials, which always bummed me out anyway.

At the same time, I almost feel like some of the other changes they made--redesigning the TARDIS & the sonic screwdriver--were a wise choice because it helped to avoid some comparisons between Tennant & Smith; a daunting prospect considering Tennant's massive popularity.

BTW, what do the asterisks next to "The Lodger" & "The Pandorica Opens" indicate? Were those episodes that aired opposite the World Cup or something?

Doctor Who has a unfixed moving timeslot anywhere between 6pm and 7pm + Later parts of the season is during early summer time so people are out of the house on saturdays + Big football events like World Cups, European Championships, Champions League final + Wimbledon might enter the frame very late into the season.

This chips away at the live audience but normally you see massive gains in I Player & repeat ratings. Doctor Who series 5 (2010) broke many I player records.

I saw the sketch and thought it was awesome, and yes I too thought it was a nice touch when the Doctor adjusts his bow tie when Amanda Holden appeared on the screen. I would too ;)
