NASA's next major mission down to final 3. Which would you choose?

Here are the three
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8434815.stm

basically its

1. Sample return from an asteroid
2. Sample return from a pole of the moon.
3. A lander on Venus.

My personal favourite would be the Venus mission if the lander could survive for a reasnble period of time greater than a couple of hours. That seems exciting. I'm not adverse to any of these 3 but I would shoot for Venus.

I'd have to go with a sample from an asteroid. That would probably be the most beneficial. The chances of finding new materials and alloys are the greatest there, I think. Such research probably would end up with asteroid mining opportunities.

A lander on Venus would be the coolest, however. I like landers. I really want to see that boat on Titan.

The sample from the moon would probably be the most economical. It could be a precursor to the asteroid mission.

Well, we're several decades away from being capable of swinging on a star...

... and one of the missions proposes a feasible method of carrying moonbeams home in a jar...

... hopefully in an attempt to enable us to become better off than we are....

... so from that logic I'll probably go for the moon mission. :bolian:

It's a shame none of these are germane to the search for life. My preference would be for another Mars mission or for an ambitious effort to get a lander on Europa.

Mars missions have earmarked funding so these three won't effect them. I would love a Europa lander too, but that will take major money, which these missions just don't get.

My first choice is Venus lander :techman:, although an asteroid sample return sound great as well.

As for the moon option...*yawn*....we've done the moon a bazillion times before, so why waste a New Frontiers budget for this? This is the most uninteresting option so NASA will most likely choose it - so much for igniting the public enthusiasm for space exploration :scream:.

None of these missions is going to reignite the public's interest in the space program, and that is okay because most missions should not be designed with that in mind. Having said that, it sure seems backwards that NASA is thinking of sending an unmanned probe to the moon, when they used to send people there. Personally, I'm actually not all that interested in a Venus lander, since we have sent landers to Venus already, but there is always more there to learn, I'm sure. Returning samples from an asteroid sounds interesting to me.

I like the idea of more moon activity.

I want people to be looking up at Tycho city or New Berlin some day.

^^ And I also like the idea of the Moon colonies rebelling against the Earth Government, forming their own army, and setting up a laser weapons platform that can devastate entire Earth cities within seconds. :bolian:

I like the lander on Venus idea.

More needs to be done with exploring Venus.

Gotta be the moon. Nothing huge is going to happen till we learn all we can about the moon and use it as a jumping off point.

Not a problem. Earth got enough nukes to blast the moon from the sky! Would you miss it? Would You? :rommie:

The sea coasts, wildlife, and basically anything else reliant upon the moon's tidal forces most certainly would. ;)

And besides, you'd need 3-stage rockets to get them there in 1-2 days in the first place, during which they'd be picked off easily. :bolian:

What a great thought I'm starting a new thread!

After thinking about it a bit more I think NASA should go to the asteroid.
