NASA's future

I love his enthusiasm on going to Mars, but I just don't see how the private sector is going to pick up the tab.

^Who said they are? NASA will pay the tab. The private sector will be happy to provide the services in exchange.

Good thing Armstrong said what he did about Obama and the space program.

(BTW, shouldn't this thread be in a different forum.)

This is General Trek Discussion and President Obama is a Trekkie, so what better place to put it?

Of course Armstrong wants to go back to the moon, it is the only thing for which he is famous. When Bush said, "Let's go to Mars," everyone thought it was a great idea, but when President Obama says, "Let's go to Mars," people complain. The double standard is appalling.

Bush is also a Trekkie.
The double standard thing; it is a bit surprising, since it usually goes the other way.

There was an article in Scientific American, or New Scientist, which detailed about ten projects that have cost billions and have then been grounded. They were really good, orbiters and shuttles and so on.

NASA seem to keep putting their toe in and then running away, going so far, and then stopping. I'ts understandable, cos it's expensive and congress are wary, but they're going to have to go with one eventually and stick to it. I read that they are just going to orbit Mars and then come back by 2030. They may go the whole hog and land, before I die. Unless there is some quantum leap in technology, which changes everything.

The country was in a different financial position and carrying a lot less debt. I'm a big NASA supporter from way back and I'm thinking this is something we as a nation can no longer afford to do. I can even see, in the years to come, much of NASA simply being eliminated. Fills me with sadness.
