NASA will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. PST on Thursday, Dec. 2, to discuss an astrobiology finding that will impact the search for evidence of extraterrestrial life. Astrobiology is the study of the origin, evolution, distribution and future of life in the universe.

The news conference will be held at the NASA Headquarters auditorium at 300 E St. SW, in Washington. It will be broadcast live on NASA Television and streamed on the agency's website at http://www.nasa.gov.

They found ET hiding in that kid's shed.

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Reposting my comments from TNZ:

The panel will consist of a:

---- microbiologist (and head of the astrobiology program)
---- molecular biologist / biochemist / phytoplankton physiology researcher
---- JPL scientist who's published in biogeochemistry and finding chemical biosignatures in extreme environments
---- and a molecular cell biologist

JPL oversees the Opportunity Rover on Mars. It's mission is to search for signs of past liquid water activity and whether those environments were once conducive to life.

Maybe they dug up a sample that contained signs of ancient microbial life, or found liquid water not too far beneath the surface in the crater it's exploring.

Would be cool though.

2010.

The year we made contact.

:D :D :D

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

I look forward to hearing more about it. Keep up the good work NASA.

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Pretty exciting stuff.

:techman:

I'm very interested to hear what they're going to say.

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

My opinion, it's probably just related to findings on Mars, perhaps more evidence of water on Mars, or beneath the surface with the potential to host life.

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Ignore my earlier comment (now deleted.) The speculation that it had to do with Titan appears to have been shot down.

"I'm sad to quell some of the... excitement about possible extraterrestrial life. I've seen the Science paper. It's not that."

I'll just have to wait and see like everyone else. (Maybe.)

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

They found a derelict orbiting Saturn. good job we can't send a manned mission - it wouldn't end well.

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Maybe they found that nothing exists.

panics

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Everyone wants to hope that there is other life out there, somewhere. But what if scientists discover that life absolutely cannot exist anywhere else in the universe for xxx reason, what then?

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Klingons! They have found Klingons! God help us all!

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

I remember that the last time NASA held a news conference it was more hyped than the Star Wars prequels. I can't remember the exact content of the announcement, but when they actually said what it was, it wound up being a real "eh" moment. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised, but I'm not holding my breath. Their budget has been woefully cut beyond belief, and I suspect this is another desperate attempt at trying to drum up interest to remain relevant.

Then we destroy ourselves with cleansing thermonuclear fire, for we are an abomination and cannot allow ourselves to exist! :techman:

Merry Christmas everyone!

Last time it was idle speculation which ramped up the scope of the expectation. All NASA really said was "We've found something." I'm still not sure why everyone was expecting aliens after that.

That would open up a new angle for research as we try to figure out what makes life possible on Earth but not anywhere else.

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Well, this will certainly drive me crazy for the next day and a half.

By definition, it would be. :)

Re: NASA to hold press conference regarding "Astrobiological Discovery

Yeah, but a basic understanding of the NASA mission and mindset should have made it clear there were many, many more likely possibilities.
