N64 deserves more credit than it gets...

Commodore
I'm sick of a lot of nerds dissing the N64. That console was great. Here's why:

  • I don't care if it used cartridges or not. They might have been more expensive to manufacture and purchase but, they didn't break as easy as a PS1 game. As much as I love an optical disc's immense storage capacity, there's something to be said for a software medium with a hard plastic case.

  • The control wasn't quite as weird as some might claim. In fact, I liked it a lot. Also, the N64 wasn't the 1st with analog sticks. That honor belongs to the Coloecovision (sort of) and the Atari 5200. However, Nintendo was the first manufacturer to design an analog stick that worked. :)

Thoughts, opinions, questions, comments, outrageous objections and Death Threats are both welcome and expected.

The N64 allowed me to play both Goldeneye and The Ocarina of Time. It is therefore the greatest console ever made.

Fantastic machine the N64, if it were not for Nintendo's dire games releases in the EU and their nasty little game price fixing scam they got done for the machine might have been more popular than it was.

Nice console, but it hasn't aged well at all. I give it credit for the handful of good games it had, and I never had a problem with the controller. Other than that, though, I think it was a pretty mediocre system. I regret to this day choosing it over a Playstation for Christmas way back when.

I love the N64. I remember waiting to get it for my tenth birthday when it was released and the constant arguments with PS1 owners about the price and the game library but it turned out to be totally worth it. Mario 64 completely enthralled me and the console ended up having just enough killer titles to last through it's lifespan for me. I don't know if there would have been enough if I'd been in the same "buy a game, complete the game, buy another game" cycle I'm in now but for a kid it was amazing.

And yes, four player Goldeneye was great but where's the love for Perfect Dark? It was the same but better in every way (apart from the horrible slowdown). My friends and I spent ludicrous amounts of time on that game.

This.

I remember the N64 used to get alot of flack back in the day but now it seems as if views have changed quite a bit and the system is viewed along side the Dreamcast as an under rated, awesome system

I never had a N64 but I still play my PS1 games over 10 years later

I really enjoyed playing it at my friend's house, but the game library sucked . . . Mario games, more Mario games, Goldeneye, and Zelda

I remember I chose it so I could play Turok: Dinosaur Hunter.

PS1 had a bigger library because its barrier to entry was so low. The N64 was probably the most difficult console of its generation to code for, due to some weird design decisions and limited hardware capabilities of its time.

There were some great games on it, and it's certainly a good console if you prefer quality over quantity.

I still disagree with their decision to make it cartridge-based, use RDRAM, and have a 4KB texture cache. It could have been a significantly better system had they made some different design decisions, but what's done is done, I suppose.

I use an N64 emulator on my PC, it's the only time I ever play computer games. I have Goldeneye, F-Zero X, Shadows of the Empire and 1080 Snowboarding.

I love it.

The quality of the games is what made this system. I couldn't afford to buy a lot of games so I would get like no more than 4 a year. The replay factor on those games were great for a young teenager trying to stretch a dollar.

Me n my friends had many many hours of fun with GoldenEye, Perfect Dark and Quake so I love the console.

NFL Blitz! Goldeneye! Starfox! Many hours of fun-but what was with that little dimple on the left stick? It took 2 years for the notch in my thumb to go away!

I've never heard anybody say anything remotely bad about the N64. I still play mine occasionally.

Super Mario 64 is the second greatest game of all time behind Super Mario Galaxy
Banjo-Kazooie
Goldeneye
Shadows of the Empire
Star Wars Pod Racer

This console rocks...

I'd say the Saturn and it's two CPUs would be the worst. Occasionally you could see the power of the thing when Sega put together a masterpiece (Panzer Dragoon Saga), but practically no other developers were able to use the Saturn effectively.

Anyway, the N64 is a great system, but it has its fair share of problems. It had some of the best games ever made released on it, but that's about it. You had 10 A+++ games on it, and nothing else. If you wanted to play something other than an Nintendo or Rare game you were right out of luck. There was nothing else on the system. The Playstation gave you everything the N64 did right (Spyro and Crash) as well as hundreds of other great games of all types.

The other reason people speak badly about the N64 is that it marked the downfall of Nintendo. The N64 began a downward spiral for Nintendo that would last 2 generations and 10 years.
