Mysterious FX shot

Hi all,
does anybody know which episode this picture is from?

Romulans%28small%29.jpg

It's taken from the TNG 1992 Calendar, so it must be one episode from the first four seasons. I thought it was "The Defector" (3.10), but when I checked the episode I couldn't find that particular shot.

Thanks,
Maab

Just a guess, but I'd say it was a publicity still.

Quite possibly. Sometimes still FX shots are specially composited for publicity and don't quite match anything in the source material. There are some examples in the old tie-in magazines that Starlog published for movies like TWOK and TSFS.

You are absolutely right, but this is not the case: Memory Alpha was right. It's from "Data's Day".

Thanks!

I seem to remember ILM did some plates showing their wares that Starlog used on the cover. One had Enterprise firing on Reliant's torpedo bay with phasers, another showing reliant bleeding plasma--in TWOK you only saw sparks.

That looks pretty good for a screencap printed, though you can tell there's interlacing artifacts on that Romulan ship.

This is why I was sure it was from an episode. Probably a screen-cap from a TV master (maybe Beta SP).

These are the two pictures you are referring to.

And to stay on-topic with TNG, here are few publicity special effects shot from pre-CGI era:

The top image from The Wrath of Khan was also the big movie poster in the Lobby I was looking at while waiting to watch the film for the first time. I had not seen anything about the Reliant yet and seeing that partial view of an obviously Federation craft of unknown configuration really sent my mind wheeling.

I just love that famous shot of the Enterprise-D, used on the 1992 calendar in Maab's post. It shows off the graceful lines, is well lit, and looks great with the contrast of the planet in the background. Shame the shadows don't match! I remember that was the first picture of the new Enterprise I saw, and was stunned!

And as a counterpoint, that last shot is probably the worst publicity photo of the Enterprise-D. It's the ugly four footer, it's horrendously overlit, and it's a very unflattering, ungainly angle.

The underside saucer section of the 1701-D with all the detail is really noticeable and so much better than the one without any detail (they usually show it passing left to right). I think the upgrade happened in the 3rd or 4th season (3rd, I think).

I like the image of the Enterprise hitting the Reliant from a distance. Most of the action in TWOK is close up (which is good because you can see detail), although there is one image in the movie of the Enterprise firing and missing the Reliant from a distance. Meyer really handled that dogfight well.

I agree! And it was overused, especially in the Star Trek Fact Files:

I had that shot as a giant poster on my wall for a long time as a teenager.
