My Sketchups Starships

Welcome aboard!

I like that second one. I've often doodled starships with that kind of "saucer" as well.

I like the Confidence-Class design, myself. The class name is a little odd though - brings to mind the idea that ships would be named things like U.S.S. Stuart Smalley, U.S.S. Positivity, or U.S.S. Tony Little. ;)

I am now working on another ship called the Unity-Class. It will look great!
Expected in a week or so...

I like the second one though they are all pretty good by the way what version of sketch up are you using?

I also like to dabble in sketch-up, i dont really have the motivation to learn a more advanced tool even if sketch-ups limitations sometimes really annoy me.

this model is supposed to be a large non-combat heavy engineering ship.

built more for shuttlecraft, docks are large enough for runabouts and the main bay can fit a defiant for repairs away from a starbase.

one day i may just get round to actually finishing it, i normally make my own textures to replace the default ones and upload with a true rendering programme with light sources, it isnt a good as a solution as a full 3dmax image or such but it removes a lot of sketch-up's limitations.

i will look at your models once iam back on my proper pc as the cpu in this struggles with even one vertex.

beautiful ship I like it but I don't like that big thing on the saucer section.

hi mate, tried yours too definitely nice to see different styles over more conventional trek designs. it took me a few models to get to grips with sketch-ups quirks and to start on what are for me 'projects'

which big lump on the saucer section? the big hanger underneath is kind of supposed to be ungainly in many respects as i was really trying to move the ship into workhorse territory rather then the elegant hero ship we always see on screen. with all those fancy ships getting half blown up every week some poor bugger has to go out there and carry the bits to fix them.

if you measure up that big hanger you will notice its just the right size to fit a defiant with room to spare.

although you may have to forgive me in that the model is currently upside down, it started out completely differently and was simply easier to carry on with that way round.

back onto yours and the inverness class (called raptor class in the model?), really digging the proportions and style. hope you carry on with the design. the 'straight arrow' aspect and the dark design certainly make things more interesting, side and rear profiles in particular are excellent in my view and i really hope you continue to work with the design.

here is a rendering programme that can work with sketch-up that improves the views massively

http://www.kerkythea.net/joomla/index.php?option=com_openwiki&Itemid=75&id=tutorials

head half way down the page and check the sketch-up sections for a tuturial, it can take a little while to get your head round the lighting and what intensities are required but the results are 10x better then what sketch up shows.

i will try to upload some pics later of a earlier project of mine but i encourage any with sketch-up to try it out.

early model of mine-

unrendered-

rendered with lights- (a few too many in fact)

cool Akira like design there :) :techman:

me too i like the akira type one. do all my ships in sketch up. took ages learning most of the tricks a lot of it was trail and error.
might give kerkythea a go looks good

Ah, fellow SketchUppers! It is good to see that you have found the ways of this great program and the great renderer that makes a lot of nicyness possible!

I could expand on the tips and tricks here, but I'm going to refer you to my tutorials post at SFM for that; no need in to type it out twice ;) As I've seen, what most have you are struggling with is to get a reasonably smooth model. I hope those tips & tricks will help you out :)

Nifty stuff- I just dusted off my sketchup but can't figure out how to save an image to - say- my photobucket account. Do I export it as a 2D drawing as opposed to as a 3D? (As per two options)...
