My new Trek book, especially for VOY fans

intriguing stuff. i'm curious in particular about TOS' deconstruction of the male gaze. are there any ep's in particular you can point to without spoiling the whole book? I always think of 'What Little Girls Are Made of,' 'The Menagerie,' 'Miri' and 'City on the Edge of Forever,' all of which would seem fairly male gaze-centric in my opinion (and I suppose 'The Naked Time' in a much harsher way). I'll always remember that REALLY weird way they shot Edith Keeler in 'City.' Pretty sure I remember reading somewhere that they actually put Vaseline on the camera lens for that and some other female C-U shots to make them seem more 'heavenly' or 'visionary' or whatever.

And of course 'Menagerie' is, at least in the flashback portion, almost entirely ABOUT the male gaze, where Pike is the camera, if you will. It's all about what will be pleasing to his eye for an extended period of time, or if a woman who's super intelligent can 'compute' as 'sexy' because of that and so on and so forth.

And Miri, I always loved that, 'I've always been trying to get you to look at my legs, Captain. WELL, LOOK AT MY LEGS' line. even dialogue inviting the eye down the road of male gaze.

And as a red-blooded hetero male I can never take my frickin' eyes off Uhura's legs during any bridge scene (though perhaps you argue that by making it part of the background that destroys its power?). Anyway, extremely curious about that. Thanks!
