My New Job Dilemma

Here's the deal: as many of you know, I was recently laid off due to Circuit City closing down many of it's stores (just prior to it closing down ALL of it's stores). I went about a month without a job and just living off of what I had saved up during the liquidation process.

About a week ago I got a call from a company that does marketing. That was basically all I knew about them. I went in for an interview on Tuesday, had a second interview and got the job on Wednesday. Basically what I'll be doing is acting as a sales rep for DirecTV at a Fry's Electronics. It's right up my alley and similar to what I did at Circuit City for nearly 4 years.

Except for one thing. It's strictly commission based. If I don't signed anyone up on a given day, I don't get paid. Granted, I only need to sign up two people a day to meet goals...but the fact remains that if I get no sales, I get no money. On the other hand, however if I am able to get a lot of sales I have nearly unlimited potential for earning...which something not possible with an hourly job.

Now if this was my only option, it'd be easy. However, I just got an email from another electronics retailer who would like to talk to me about a job. I haven't talked to anyone yet, but there is a location of this company literally walking distance from home, (whereas the marketing job is at least 20 miles away with the home office being about 50 miles away, over a toll bridge) and it would be an hourly position meaning...a steady reliable paycheck (assuming I have steady reliable hours, of course).

So I have a dilemma. Do I stick with the commission job that might make me a lot of money but could also lead to stress, and a lot of driving. Or...pursue the hourly job close to home that might not make me as much but would at least be somewhat reliable?

I seek the wisdom of the Misc forum, and thank it for its time.

I would go with the regular paycheck. Sales jobs are unpredictable. You can do very well with them but they are not for me

Another vote for the steady paycheck here. I'd generally take a paycut if it came with higher security, but of course you know your own situation best.

Especially in this economy, I'd go with the steady paycheck. I can't imagine that many people are splurging on fancy DirecTV packages (which, I assume, would be the kind of sale that would really bring in the big bucks for you.)

Go for the steady reliable paycheck. A commission job in this economy when people are being extra frugal sounds like a bad idea, especially when coupled with a commute and a toll bridge fee.

Have you done any research into how DirecTV sales are doing recently?

Another vote for the regular sure pay-check. Commission based gigs are a pain in the ass.

Hmm, I never considered how different packages might also bring in different commissions. That could definitely be a problem...

Here is my problem now...I am scheduled to come in at 8:00am this morning to start training, fill out paperwork, etc. I still haven't talked to the recruiting manager from the hourly job offer...should I call and let the job know I can't make it in today? I'm not technically an employee yet and not going in today would give me a chance to contact the other guy and find out what he's putting on the table. But...I don't know if not coming in to training will cost me the entire job.

It figures. I go a month with no leads whatsoever and now that I have one they all come out of the woodwork.

any other economy the commission might be worth the risk but now i know people dropping cable , dish to save money.

Take the hourly wage job. The econony is bad so you might not get two people a day to sign up, plus gas is going up and why spend extra for gas when you can walk to work.

Okay, so I called the place and gave them a "family emergency" excuse and that I won't be able to make it in for training. This will give me a chance to call the guy with the hourly job offer and see what he's putting on the table. I might keep this commission job as a last resort.

worst case, go take the commission job, but keep interviewing for something else.

In the end, you're going to want a regular paycheck. Think of how pissed you'll be if you drive 20 miles each way, spend time and gas, and don't get a paycheck that day!

I definitely feel like I made the right move. I just got off the phone with the area recruiting manager, and I have an interview on Monday for an assistant manager position! And that job is hourly PLUS bonuses/incentives. :)

Sounds fair enough.

Bottom line, you gotta go with the job that suits you best. Some people thrive in commission-based jobs; some people prefer regular paycheques. No right or wrongs here, it seems to me, just about deciding what you as a person would feel best doing. And sounds like you've done that.

Yeah, I basically had a "moment of clarity" as I was getting ready to leave this morning and realized I had to take a step back and check out this other opportunity. And now I have this interview on Monday afternoon for a much more fitting (and prestigious) position.

Are you the "sales type"? Gregarious, self-confident, high degree of tolerance for risk? Does the prospect of "hunting down sales" seem like a fun challenge, as though you were a hunter stalking prey in the woods, or does it just seem like a big fat pain in the ass and a stupid way to make a living.

If you are not the sales type, don't try to be. Take the hourly job. I suspect you are not the sales type - those types usually recognize that they can make big bucks in sales and don't need prodding to go for that career.

Career advice always boils down to the same thing: do what you feel you are meant to do, something you can look forward to, not dread. Any other approach leads to failure and frustration, even if you manage to get security and a decent paycheck.

Sounds like you already know in your gut you made the right move, that's great.

Sounds like it's got the potential to work out well for you. Good luck on Monday!
