My mom misses Star Trek

She loved the new movie, but it's not enough. She misses her favorite characters and wants to start reading some of my books. Even though she's in her 50s, she's very much a child of the Berman-era. She loves Worf. She still gets upset when she is reminded that Data is dead. She loves Sisko and The Wormhole and wants to know if he ever comes out. And she wants to know what happened to Voyager once it got home.

Now, she's a teacher and usually spends her nights grading homework, so she doesn't have time for a lot of fun reading, so I really don't want to get her started with a huge series, and I almost feel like the the current state of Trek books would be hard to follow (at least from what I've heard, there is a lot of crossover?).

I think she would be better off with either some stand-alone stories or a more self-contained series (like New Frontier, especially since she's a big fan of soap opera-type stories). I'm going to go through my books tonight and see what I have, but I was wondering what your suggestions might be.

Does she only likes Worf, or Klingons in General? If the latter, you may should try to get her the IKS Gorkon/Klingon Empire books. If it's only Worf maybe Diplomatic Implausibility, it's the tale of Worf's first mission as ambassador and it also introduces the IKS Gorkon.

Well, Worf is her favorite character, but she enjoys Klingons as well. She always thought the Duras sisters were hilarious because of their Klingon Boobs.

IKSG/KE is definitely the way to go, as it is only 4-6 books that deal with characters from that series. You could also give her TNG: Q&A. It features Worf as the XO of the Enterprise under Picard, and it's a great stand alone book.

The current treklit 24th century books do have some crossover (Destiny especially) but most if not all of the books can be read on their own. If she likes Voyager and is curious about what happens post-Endgame, then she's in luck. There have only been 6 books in that series, and only the last two (Full Circle, Unworthy), both of which came out in 2009, are really needed to get the whole story.

I was merely trying to imply that, even though she's in her 50s and grew up watching it, these days she doesn't have much of an interest in TOS. She'd rather read about the more recent stuff.

I thought about Titan, but I haven't read it yet. I haven't read a new Trek book in years (NF is the only series I follow anymore). She'd rather dig into my collection than go out and buy stuff I can't recommend.

"Diplomatic Implausibility" is definitely gonna go on the list.

Obviously, for Sisko and the wormhole, I'd have to recommend Avatar book one through Unity. However, my mom (Who also misses Star Trek, and in fact watched the first run of TOS while pregnant with me) just read Avatar 1&2 and Unity without reading the in-between books and was able to follow the story just fine.

The Post-Finale Voyager books startout hit-and-miss for the first four volumes, but really hit their stride with book five, Full Circle.

If she's a tng fan like she seems to be, and I accept that you may not have this but wasn't their a collection of short tng stories released not too recently, sky's the limit, I think. That sounds to0 me like a good place to start (haven't read it myself). That way she can pick out favorite authors, topics, etc etc.
