My god! Bryan Fuller is sending all the right signals about Trek!

If Kurtzman is a big Trekkie, I could see him being a bit more hands on, just because he loves the franchise so much.

I think Orci and Lindelof were the biggest Trekkies in the "Supreme Court" of the past two movies. I think Kurtzman's a fan, but not as devotedly.

Honestly, I couldn't care less how big a fan any of the show runners claim to be. If the story sucks, none of it matters. That's why it was so glorious when Nick Meyer was tapped for this. He will keep the project grounded. To him, before TWOK, Spock was nothing more than just "the guy with the ears" and it could be argued that he saved the franchise single-handed. The fandom makes movies successful by purchasing tickets, but the fandom shouldn't make movies.

This is true, but it's not what we were talking about. JD was just suggesting that if Kurtzman were a fan, he might be motivated to be more hands-on with this than with the other shows he produces. Nothing to do with the quality of the results, merely a conjecture about the way the man would allocate his attention.

Although on reflection, I have to disagree with JD, on similar grounds to your statement here. Whatever he may or may not be a fan of, Kurtzman is a professional with a lot of responsibilities and obligations. Often that overrides personal preferences. Sometimes you can engage professionally with the things you're a fan of -- as I've been able to do as a Star Trek tie-in author -- but if you have other commitments that demand more attention or priority, you can't just ignore those career responsibilities in the name of personal fondness.

I think it's a given that the Mummy remake and the Universal Monsters franchise will be the most important things on Kurtzman's plate for the near future. TV is bound to take second place to movies. Look at Joss Whedon. He co-created Agents of SHIELD and executive-produces it, but he's on record as saying that he totally ignored it when he wrote and directed Avengers: Age of Ultron.
