My Girlfriend/Trek experiment

So when i met my girlfriend (now fiance!) 4 years ago i knew that we shared a lot of common interests, (IE:star wars, video games, comics, horror and sci-fi movies, ect, ect) but i also found out that she hated star trek. Being a trek fan i asked why, and she responded that when she was younger she tried to watch a couple of episodes and even watched TWOK, but found it to be boring. Taking this as a challenge i decided to do a experiment to she if i could turn her into a fan. she likes alot of sci-fi movies so i presumed that she would atleast like one of the series or movies. So this is my Girlfriend/trek experiment.

ROUND 1...TNG. I decided to start her out on TNG, thinking that if she didnt enjoy it that there probably would be no hope for the other series. after a shaky start with season 1, (she thought that some of the episodes were terrible) she enjoyed seasons 2 through 7. she came to like most of the crew(Picard, Data, and Worf being her fav's) although she didnt like Dr Cursher and prefered Dr Pulaski from season 2. All and all she enjoyed the show, even commenting that the scripts and acting got better as the seasons progressed.

ROUND 2...TNG MOVIES. After we wraped up the series i started with TNG MOVIES. While she enjoyed most of them, she felt that Generations and Insurrection were a bit of a let down, but she loved First Contact and Nemesis, she even cried at the end of Nemesis when Data died.

Round 3...Enterprise. After taking a break from Trek for about 2 weeks, i continued the experiment with ENT. i figure if she liked the most appluded Trek series what would she think of the most hated. (even though i dont agree, for me ENT was one of the best Trek shows!!) To my surprise she loved it, even likeing it better than TNG! She loved the characters and loved the throwback setting compared to TNG. We just finished seasons 1,2, and 3. She was pissed to find out that it is only 4 seasons compared to the other series except for TOS that have 7 seasons. we are now starting season 4, i cant wait to hear what she thinks of TATV at the end of the season.

so there you have it, my girlfriend, who hated star trek, now is a fan of atleast 2 of the series, now my decision is what series should we start after ENT, should we go on to TOS, or DS9? Im saving VOY for last considering it's my least fav series. i will continue to update as the experiment progresses.

You have to show here where it all started with Star Trek...the original series. I'm pushing 50 and grew up with the original series and it still is my favorite. So if you're younger the series may seem dated for you but stick with it because it has some excellent stories and there is a good reason the original series is the foundation for the entire franchise.

If she's already seen som of TOS, it might be better leaving that until later and go with DSN.

i have decided to go with TOS after we finish ENT. Although it will be the remastered version, and TOS was my first introduction to Star Trek when i was a kid, my father and I would watch the re-runs, along with other sci-fi shows like Buck Rogers and the original Battlestar Galactica! :bolian:

has anyone else had a similar experience of getting someone into the Trek universe?

My wife used to confuse Star Trek with Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers. Well, her brothers used to talk about Trek a lot, but every time she caught them watching TV, they usually had the Power Rangers on. So to her, for many, many years, Star Trek was that show "with the yellow and the pink guy in motorcycle helmets". Go figure.

Fast forward to January 2011.

We like to spend rainy days and evenings watching movies and TV series on DVD/Blu-ray, and we just finished all those new TV sets from the 2009/2010 season. So we were looking for something else to watch.

Against my better judgment, and just kind of as an experiment, I popped in one of the TOS Blu-rays, and we watched Space Seed. The wife loved it, so we went on to Amok Time and Journey to Babel. Next came movies 2, 3, 4 and 6. She demanded more.

So we started to watch all of TNG, DS9 and Voyager in proper chronological order, with the remaining 76 TOS episodes and two movies interspersed wherever they fit in thematically (The Naked Time before The Naked Now - The Enemy Within before Second Chances - you get the drift). After that, we'll be watching Enterprise.

This weekend we watched our 484th episode/movie of Star Trek, and she's really looking forward to her first convention in September.

Thas was one experiment that worked exceptionally well, and served to remind me why I married this wonderful girl in the first place.

I'd a friend who detested with a firey burning hatred Star Trek, her ex had dragged her to the cinema to see TMP, and she'd nearly died from boredom.

I made her watch TVH, she reluctantly admitted that it'd been "okay"

She started watching TNG on the telly

Win.

:techman:Don't hold back the good stuff! Pop in those TOS DVDs. Don't be surprised though if she starts drooling over William Shatner without his shirt on. Youza!

When I met my now-wife in 1992 (!), she was pretty much a TNG-only fan. I got her hooked on TOS after only a couple eps, a series she used to mock. Give it a try and good luck!

we are now starting season 4, i cant wait to hear what she thinks of TATV at the end of the season.
.

I find this highly annoying....all the great episodes from season 4 and people still focus on TATV!!! It wasn't even that bad.

My wife likes all the ST shows, though she finds TOS to be the least tolerable. Currently we have been watching some of Enterprise on Netflix through the bluray player. It really was an underrated show.

Hmm...I'd say:

What kinds of stories does she like? Is she the kind of person who sinks her teeth into complex stuff, focusing on character arcs driving the plot? Or simpler, plot-based stuff?

If the former--show her DS9. If the later--TOS or VOY.

Same happened here. My girlfriend wasn't into scifi at all. It started when I was watching nuBSG and she sat next to me after the first ten minutes of the pilot. After that, Babylon 5. Then DS9, now Voyager. And after a few of the TNG movies she really wants to see TNG. :D:D

Or, instead of trying to indoctrinate her, include her in your fanfic(s) as Captain or First Officer. Girlfriends may or may not enjoy *reading* your stories, but I know for a fact that including them as a character in your fanon shows your personal Imzadi that they're on your mind ~a lot~, beyond work, money and other everyday anxieties. That's all many male/female 'significant others' want - just a little less than a desire to get/have your undivided attention.

Hmm....

It's an interesting point.

Still, there is something Quentin Tarantino once said:

When I'm getting serious about a girl, I show her Rio Bravo and she better :censored:-ing like it!

If she thinks the stuff you've got a passion for is nothing to write home about...it won't work out.

That's ridiculous advice. :rommie:

HEY, if she doesn't like something which you have a passion for, guess what's going to result in way too many "lovers' quarrels"!

If she shares your passions, she is less likely to be of the mindet that, "Oh, you're obsessed with that, and you're not focusing enough on me!" Instead, taking part in mutual likings helps bring two people together....

But as Dennis Miller once said, "Course, that's just my opinion; I could be wrong."
