My Favorite TNG Acting Moment

Defiler-Of-Redshirts

Commander
Red Shirt
In the 3rd-season episode Sarek when Capt. Picard confronts Ambassador Sarek about his illness: "Is it logical for a Vulcan to cry? Would Sarek of Vulcan be afraid of looking at a truth he didn't want to see? Would Sarek of Vulcan mistake what he wanted for the truth." It's that acting scene between Stewart and Lenard that gave me the goosebumps.

I will list 4
1 Admiral Satie trying to bring down Picard in "The Drumhead" while he was on the stand.
2 The scene were Geordi walks in on Dr Brahms, watching a holodeck version of what happened in season 3.
3Barclay hearing all the possible side effects of transporter phychois and sort of feeling it one of them in his head, while listening to them from "Realm of Fear."
4 The diner scene between Picard and his family in the episode, "Family."

Top 5
5. Jean Simmons - Admiral Satie's meltdown in The Drumhead
4. Patrick Stewart - Picard's fight with his brother Robert in Family
3. James Sloyan - Admiral Jarok's "I did it for nothing" in The Defector
2. Bob Gunton - Maxwell's confessional to O'Brien in The Wounded
1. Mark Lenard - Sarek on his deathbed in Unification

I got a few more:
1 Brent Spiner playing Data,Lore and Soong in the same episode and against each other in "Brothers."
2 Picard and Guinan in the fencing scene in "I Borg."
3 Lal dying and Data and her basically having to say goodbye to each other in "The Offspring."

Jason

Other honorable mentions

Michelle Forbes' one scene as the aging scientist's daughter in Half A Life.
Dr. Kila Marr in her last scene of Silicon Avatar, when Data delivers the final icy blow to her sanity
Picard channeling Sarek's mind in Sarek

"The Survivors"... when Kevin Uxbridge confesses to Picard what he had done to the Husnock.

"The Enemy"... the exchange between Picard and Worf in the Ready Room regarding donating blood to the Romulan.

"The Inner Light"... the final scene when Riker gives Picard the box, and he opens it to reveal the flute and plays the song.

I have so many more, but it would take a long time to list them.

Hmm. I also liked Saul Rubinek in The Most Toys. He gave just the right combination of whimsy and threatening.

That was an impressive character, but talk about tragic serendipity. The role was David Rappaport's and Rubinek was recast at the last moment due to Rappaport's suicide. Having seen some of the original performance on the Blu-ray, I dont think Rappaport would have been anywhere near as effective in the role as Rubinek was.

I got a few more:

I love Guinan and Picard fencing!!!
The other great fencing scene is on "Blame it on Paris" Picard is fencing with Some Guy.
They sort of grab each others' arms and 'flip' each other to the opposite side of the strip!!
Love it!
Pretty sure if i did that in a competition I'd get a Red card. Lol

Picard Fencing is a big part of my Fan-fic.

1. Picard's examination of Cmdr. Maddox at Data's trial.

2. Q explaining the difference between Picard with an artificial heart and a real one, by not fighting the Nausican.

3. Q telling Picard about their arrogance when they face the Borg.

4. Picard's diplomacy on display with the Malcorians.

5. Picard's dress down of Wesley about the Kulvord Starburst that killed Joshua Albert.

6. Picard telling Robert about the Borg assimilation.

Lots of Patrick Stewart moments. Still, I compliment him and the actors with him that carried in the scenes, including Wil Wheaton.

I second Chain of Command! So damn powerful.

Maxwell and Picard in 'The Wounded'. That episode is everything.
And definitely Picard and Sarek in 'Sarek'.
Picard and his brother in the mud in 'Family'.

Patrick Stewart had so many great moments, it's hard to pick just one. So many great ones already stated. But in terms of sheer emotional management, I concur that his dealing with Sarek's emotions in "Sarek"... I can't help but have tears well up in my eyes, feeling total empathy.

I thought Frakes did a terrific job in "Frame of Mind." Probably his best acting of the series, where he's mentally manipulated into believing he's incarcerated. So much better than "Future Imperfect."

"The Drumhead" isn't one of my favorite episodes, but it's wonderful to see Jean Simmons in action, a major Hollywood star from years past. The "witch hunt" is such a key social manifestation that I think will always require mindfulness to keep it at bay. Look at today. The reversal, where someone declares there's a witch hunt when there is none. The writing was great and Patrick Stewart's delivery so masterful. Poignant words for all time.

"Unification" parts 1 & 2 finally brought Leonard Nimoy into the series as Spock. I remember waiting so eagerly for the chance that he might. Seeing it realized was so captivating. Nimoy did a fine job.

When James Doohan reprised Scotty in "Relics," I saw so much of a reflection of TOS. It had its time... "He knows that it's time to stop." Prophetic, as the TOS movies were heading for retirement. Generations came out 2 years later. Doohan was a good actor, but in the TOS movies he didn't get a chance to flex his acting muscle all that much. TNG "Relics" gave him that chance. Of course, Stewart would upstage him in talent, but I like how Doohan managed himself in the episode. A fitting send off to his Star Trek career.

"Chain of Command". The scene was in the captain's ready room.

Jellico bluntly telling Picard, "The Enterprise is mine now." Jellico wasn't one to mince words. And Picard sitting there, taking it. You could tell that Picard, by his body language, wanted to say a few more things in defense of Riker, but instead he bit his tongue. Picard, like a good soldier, knew the chain of command, and didn't press his case any further.

Great acting by both men.

Another favorite moment was the last scene of "The Wounded".

Picard turns his back to the Cardassian gul, and gives this warning to the Cardassian, "Take this message to your leaders. We'll be watching." By turning his back and just saying a few words, Picard made his message real clear. Picard wasn't wimpy or appeasing. He acted like a tough guy. Good for him.

I got a few more:

1 Picard trying to sleep on the Klingon ship in "Unification" and being bothered by Data looking at him while he processed information.

2 Picard's scene in "Best of Both Worlds" with Guinan. The stuff about this might be the end of their civiliation, turn the page.

3 Breakfast scene between Picard and Crusher in "The Perfect Mate" where she is insulting the ambassador as being a slave trader and Picard is talking about the prime directive and the war that needs to be stoped. My favorite moment though is when Picard mentions how the Kamala was told not to leave her quarters and admits he didn't know that and she says. "Well it is your ship" or something like that. It's fun to see someone basically get in a dig at Picard because they are friends.

Patrick Stewart had so many great moments, it's hard to pick just one.

Having to grovel before Q as the Borg were closing in. "Kiss me": from Lifeforce--and the best was actually from Dune
"Behold, as a wild ass in the desert go I forth..."

Some of my favorite acting scenes:

* I forget the episode, but Data makes a comment that perhaps it was best he cannot feel emotions and has been spared pain; Frakes gives a wonderful expression and says, "Perhaps..."

* Stewart's commentary that perhaps it's just history turning another page, in "The Best of Both Worlds".

* Dorn smashing Geordi's guitar (well, I can't think of the name of the instrument, so close enough) in a Q episode. I think he just simply says, "Sorry."

* The Cardassian who tortures Picard and while Picard is clearly in a bad state, the interrogator's little girl comes in and he tells her that human's don't love their children like we do. That's a reality that happens even today in certain places in the world by certain groups.

* I enjoyed the performance of Mark Twain in "Time's Arrow".

* And perhaps my favorite moment is when they all come together to chase Wesley down in "The Game". ;-)

The Measure of a Man

When Frakes shows us Riker being fascinated by Data's schematics and then how it suddenly hurt him doing so as he remembered why he was even looking it up. He wasn't tight with Data like Jordi was, but Riker valued their friendship and found himself forced into attacking it all for the sake of due process. I admit it alright, it still makes me misty ...

You guys stole all the ones I thought of (Stewart's meltdown at the end of Sarek when he gets all his thoughts/emotions, his chewing out Wesley, and pretty much him in the entirity of the second half of Chain of Command). So many for Stewart, one of the great performances on a show in TV history.

As great as Spiner is as Data, it's hard for me to think of particular moments for him. It was more just how deep into character he was and the performance is by definition understated, so particular scenes don't stand out to me.
