My closet smells vaguely of poop. >>

No, I am not incontinent. No, this is not a Jayson dual.

There is a gap between the baseboard and wall in the back of my apartment's closet, with a draft wafting up. Somebody must've made a deposit in the wall somewhere and the odor molecules are being joyfully carried to my nostrils. :(

I've vacuumed, disinfected, and aired out, but short of tearing apart the wall, waiting for petrification seems to be the only solution. :borg:

Sounds fun!

My bedroom smells vaguely of cat urine, but that's because my cat has peed on things.

My cat's breath smells like cat food.
That probably has something to do with what you are feeding him!

Several laps around the sun ago I offered a pet cat an occasional can of "tuna" flavored cat food. I don't know what they were doing to that "tuna" different than what was normally available on the canned seafood shelf, but the "tuna" cat food smelled like they had waited too long to can it! The cat acted like that stinking mess was the best tasting food in the world.

Back on topic: Any possibility some animal has done its business (or died) in the wall or some other space bellow the closet? Have you or a neighbor been using any poison to control rodent pests? Have any maintenance projects (like new siding, caulking or trim) closed any holes or cracks in the building exterior?

Call the Landlord...

Might be a maintenance problem in the building. How old is the place?

The building is probably 80-100 years old, which is nice for the sound-proof lath-and-plaster construction, but bad because there are plenty of little cavities where somebody could poop or die. No new remodeling. I've only seen one mouse in three years here and there have been no sudden changes in weather, so I'm hoping it's not an infestation. The perfume also seems to have dissipated, but I'll certainly be calling maintenance if it comes back. There was a definite draft coming from between the baseboard and the wall, so the smell could have been coming from somewhere far away, such as a leaky bathroom vent.
