Our current Littermaid box has worked just fine for about 3+ years now. Maybe they FINALLY got most of the bugs worked out (it's definitely not the exact same design as before).

Thanks for the opinions about Littermaid. I hope the one that I'll buy isn't a lemon.

Hmm. Most of the online product reviews that I've read about the Litter Maid products are mixed at best. Perhaps the second litterbox should be a "manual."

The newer ones have been better. But after two swaps I gave up and just have two manual ones using the base of the Littermaid. At some point I'll probably just hook a button up to start it manually. But for now it's a good lesson for the girls to learn in taking care of their pets.

Here's a forum I used to frequent for litterboxes. They also have some great projects for expanding the storage space for less frequent emptying.

Just hold the cat out the window and squeeze.

I wound up buying two new, large litterboxes with lids and door flaps. They're virtually identical to the one that they had been sharing. I thought that by introducing new litterboxes, neither of the two cats would be more or less inclined to switch part-time or full-time to the other box. They'd be on equal footing, pawing, or whatever.

Before I put the boxes in the room, I'm going to steam-clean the heck out of the carpet. That's going to happen either later tonight or tomorrow morning.

    I hope this works.

I was looking into one of them for my parents as a Christmas present. I heard lots of stories about the waste gunking up the mechanisms that make the whole thing work. So I settled on an Omega cat box instead. They love it. If you do chose to get it, buy the large version

That's odd. Usually it means something is wrong with the cat if he or she is going to the bathroom outside of the box. It's instinctive for them to always want to go somewhere where they can bury it, so that predators won't discover they were there. I would suggest a trip to the vet, especially if he's also peeing outside of the box. Is he?

It is. The fact that it "worked" for anyone is purely coincidental. Especially if it's done long after the fact. That's like walking up to your kid two weeks after you find out he's done something wrong, and slapping him across the face without an explanation. He'll just think you're an asshole.

Put a litterbox exactly where the cat is taking a dump.

Over the course of days, move the box slowly to the location that you actually want the box to be.

This approach modifies the cats behavior to be inline with your needs.

The litterbox has been in one corner of a small, mostly empty bedroom. When the cat boo-boo doo-doos, he does so either within a two-foot radius of the litterbox, or in the corner diagonal from the corner with the litterbox.

I suspect that part of the cat's problem -- aside from natural stupidity -- is that he probably continues to smell his own poop in the carpet, even if I can't, so he considers the carpet to be fair game. Maybe... maybe not.

I just finished running a steam cleaner over the carpet of the entire room. In about a half-hour, I'll run it again. Once that's all dry, I'll put in two new litter boxes. Hopefully this will alleviate most if not all of the problem.

You may want to get some pet odor eliminator to put down before the second steam clean.

Last night I saturated the worst areas with a spray-on pet odor/stain remover, and I placed damp cloths on top to keep the areas damp for several hours. This morning I sprayed the same stuff over those areas again a few minutes before I ran the steam cleaner.

Thanks! I'm being very thorough because I'm very tired of the cat crapping outside the litterbox. :)

    Update...

While allowing the twice-steam-cleaned carpet to dry, I had the cats' old litterbox in the hallway next to the bedroom entrance. About 15 minutes ago, I heard the stupid cat in the bedroom, wailing.

I entered the room, and it was clear that he was searching for the litterbox, so I picked him and placed him right in front of the litterbox in the hallway. He re-entered the bedroom.

So I began to prepare one of the two litterboxes. Before I had finished, I peeked back into the bedroom to find another felinoid fecal assault in progress, about one foot to the left of one of the formerly heavily stained areas.

Because I caught him in the act, I entered the room, slammed the door shut, shoved his face up to the poo pile and yelled at him. Is it mean? Probably, but in the last two days, I've spent over $300 for a new steam cleaner, new chemicals, two new litterboxes, and a truckload or three of cat litter, and I've spent valuable time that could have been spent working on MBA studies in order to cater to this stupid shit machine.

I've put one of the new litterboxes in the corner of the room formerly occupied by the old litterbox, even though the carpet is still damp. I'm reassembling the air-drying components of the steam cleaner to go over the newly defiled region of the room for the third time today. Then I'll put the second litterbox near where he just crapped.

I don't know what else to do.

My cat just threw up on the carpet. Sometimes you can't win with cats.
