Must a Vulcan MC "lose control"?

It give the actor the opportunity to do something other than be stoic all the time. Indeed, you'll note in other shows which have a stoic main character in their cast there will be frequent attempts over the course of the series to have them shed that stoic persona for an episode here and there. That's just how television works.

That can be achieved via imposters (shapeshifters?), imperfect clones, dreams, (holodeck) simulations, alternative reality counterparts and the like; all the while, the original/true Vulcan can remain composed.

That doesn't deal with an actor that wants to use their talents for more than standing around being info dumps.

Not remotely. It is different and it is a fantasy.
That's what the show tells us.

And I forgot the emoji as my tongue is firmly in cheek as I don't think Vulcans are superior and the short changing of emotions frustrates me because of the insistence of the lack of emotion is somehow praiseworthy.

Successfully pulling off an "emotionless" individual - who has layers to his or her personality - is a considerable display of talent; there is a reason why the industry isn't flooded with masterful portrayals of Vulcans (and other stoic races).

Vulcans have never been emotionless. They have tools to help them suppress their emotions.

The Vulcan way is superior.*

ETA: tongue in cheek.

I'm actually leaning toward the Romulan way being a bit better. I can't get behind their political choice, but in regards (apparently) shunning telepathic abilities in favor of retaining emotional expression.

Individually Romulans seem more stable and not prone to loosing control. Their political ambitions aside.
