Musical milestones

The MTV and '70s threads have gotten me thinking nostalgic. There is a time in most young people's lives when they break off from what their parents listen to and try to figure out what they like in music. Sometimes it takes some experimentation. What were the musical milestones of your youth?

Some of mine:

First record I bought with my own money: 7-inch 45 single of "Dreaming" by Blondie, when I was around 10 years old. I had a crush on Debbie Harry, but it is really a great song and I still love to hear it. I can't remember the b-side song.

First album I bought with my own money: "Learning to Crawl" by the Pretenders, on casette around age 14. Still enjoy this one, I've bought it on CD twice since. In the next year or two I switched to buying LP's, and recording them on cassettes for the Walkman and the car. Remember the good old Maxell XL-II C-90? Most albums would fit one one side.

First concert: Van Halen 1984 tour, also age 14. This was the concert to see in my age group. I wasn't big into VH, but I liked them OK and practiced writing their logo on my school notebooks. Didn't end up a huge VH fan, but it was a fun show and it's nice to be able to say I saw them before Hagar.

First album I went out and bought the day it was released: Talking Heads "Little Creatures" LP, 1985/age 15. Not their best album but still pretty strong, I enjoy it still when it comes up on my MP3 player. It was at a locally-owned, independent music store that specialized in "new wave" and "punk" records. Not many shops like that left.

First CD: "Boy" by U2. I got my own CD player in '86/age 16, before my parents had one. I already had "War" and "The Unforgettable Fire" on vinyl, so I was going back in their catalog. I still have this 22-year old CD, but it's never been a favorite and I haven't listened to it in years.

First CD I bought the first day: "Life's Rich Pageant" by R.E.M., also in '86. A really good record with favorites "Fall On Me" and "Superman." Still play it.

How about you?
