It's not an egg, it's a chrysalis. He's in the metamurfal stage of his life cycle.

    It's just this:

Sometimes they go to warp, or a PADD comes in, or someone from the crew

But we know how Murf will look when he comes out - even cuter:

Thank you. But that just seems even weirder that something like this would need to be geoblocked.

I'm gonna try to resist clicking on that spoiler until I can actually watch the episode. Only 20 more hours to go! :D

It just ended with the shell opening, splashing blue goo around, and the new face appearing from the side just like it appeared behind the console in the episode

That was probably geoblocked too! :p

(At least with the actual trailers, there is a fairly reliable group of international fan sites who repost them on YouTube so us non-Americans can cast our unworthy gazes upon them. ;) But I don't recall if I saw that particular trailer or not.)

After seeing this week's episode (S1-E14) anybody else think that the new Murf will be the catalyst that eventually shuts down the Diviner's weapon?

I wonder what Murf’s full adult form will be? Murf could be a infant Crystalline Entity? They could start off cute and gelatinous before ‘crystallising’ in later stages of ‘Adulthood’? A bit like a Pokémon. :D

Not sure that would follow what we already know about both of those aliens.
One would think that folks would have already tied the two together if that were possible since mellanoid slime worm is apparently a well known insult.
It's complete lifecycle was probably well studied by the time it became part of the 24th century vernacular.

If Murf’s species was well studied then why did no one know what would result from the ‘first stage’ metamorphosis? both Melanoid Slime Worm’s and Crystalline Entities have these features:
    • They can survive the vacuum of space.
    • They are nearly indestructible
    • Can grow to a large size
    • Not sentient
    • Despite not being sentient they can ‘bond’ with other species
    • They consume random material such as metal and explosions/ energy
Perhaps it is rare for a Melanoid to ‘super evolve’ because they are hunted down in their gelatinous state for some purpose or don’t often live past this stage of their life? Perhaps only one in a million evolves in to Crystalline form, being like a Borg Queen for their species or quite simply the Queen of a Bee/Melanoid nest? A crystalline entity could even be the full expression for birthing this species and have loads of baby Melanoid slime worms in between it’s crystals a bit like Ceti Eels have those baby ‘ear wigs’ in between their scales?

Or perhaps Murf *is* just a worm…

    Probably environmentally dependent.

Pretty sure some salamanders only metamorphosize if in certain conditions

The triggering of Murf’s first stage metamorphosis in ‘Let Sleeping Borg Lie’ which caused Murf to form a Chrysalis/Cocoon may be a result of being around the Diviner’s weapon for so long now. Murf may quite simply be evolving to instinctively consume this weapon, a triggered process by proximity. Murf’s form in ‘Crossroads’ could be one of the intermediary stages, preparing for a fulfilling meal which Murf is not quite ready for yet.

Murf could consume the Diviner’s weapon just before it is about to destroy Janeway/Starfleet in a final act of sacrifice and this leads to Murf exploding, but unexpectedly from the dust a *beautiful* Chrystalline Entity appears, just like how the debris from the Genesis weapon and Mutara Nebula formed the Genesis Planet in TWOK; they could even use similar music for dramatic effect. A phoenix rising from the flames. For Murf’s final metamorphosis their species may need a sudden burst of ‘massive’ energy in order to ‘crystallize’. Melanoid Slime Worm’s may usually gather at star’s before they go supernova in order to complete this process, migrating en mass from around the galaxy instinctively. It would be a bit like the opposite of what Gumtu did in the The Next Generation episode ‘Tinman’ where the space faring alien ‘entity’, which was the last of it’s kind, went to a supernova to die as a part of it’s lifecycle. Not many Slime Worm’s make this journey though as they lack warp drive or tech to do so which makes the actual final evolution of Melanoid’s very rare. People usually laugh at this species though thinking that they are slow, unintelligent and a useless slimy waste of space… so some bullies may use their name as an insult against others. If only the bullies knew the truth though… I would hate for the Melanoid’s final form to have to come back to find them all… hehe :D

Of course, Crystalline Entity Murf could no longer stay with the Prodigy crew, so there would be a very sad moment as Murf leaves in to the unknown, with music like at the end of Encounter at Farpoint when the two jellyfish aliens hold hands and fly off together. :wah:

Alternatively, perhaps this is a controlled crystallization which can slowly wear off, only triggered occasionally as a deus ex machina as needed in a story… a bit like how some Pokémon have an all powerful ‘mega evolution’ which only lasts a few hours. Eventually though, Murf *will* get stuck in the final chrystalline form… for Murf’s future is written as indelibly as Captain Pike’s. :D
