Don't watch this movie looking for anything super dramatic. This is based in fantasy, adventure.

Dwayne Johnson is in his wheelhouse with this role, comedic with just the perfect amount of seriousness and earnestness woven in. Emily Blunt, who can play all across the acting spectrum, slides perfectly into her role and plays well with Johnson and Jack Whitehall.

I have seen reviews that the movie relies too heavily on CGI, but it is needed to pull off what makes the story work. The story is already fantasy and the effects are needed to pull that off. They are handled well. There is humour like Shrek, jokes for kids, but also adult ones that go over the kids heads.

Go for the laughs and don't expect anything super groundbreaking with the story.

    The Impossible - B+

A tsunami disaster movie that is a departure from the usual hero's journey kind of disaster movie and feels quieter. After the disaster hits and there is an extended sequence with the mother and son, the movie settles into a groove of the family just trying to survive, but fairly locked in their two locales. Even with the father leaves to go searching, it doesn't feel like he is making this amazing trek.

The effects of the tsunami are really well down and sell the moment when mother and son are getting taken down the rapids and in the initial destruction of the resort.

I know the story was incredibly true to the story of the family is was based on, but I was left really wanting to know what happened to the German father that was looking for his family or the other mother in the hospital. I understand that this wasn't their story, but it was left without resolution and even if the movie isn't meant to have a happy ending, I would've preferred to have even a card at the end to say what happened if they could be located.

    Another solid movie.

    43. Scare Me (5) low budget but good directing and acting. It should have been part of an anthology.
    44. Madmad (1) Terrible slasher
    45. Jason Goes To Hell (5) it's not as bad as I've heard. I've put off watching it for 20 years, though.

I revisited this 90's Bond flick the other night, and I must say I was very impressed, with it being some years since I had last seen the film. After the awful 80's Dalton films, Bond needed to reboot in the 90's with something spectacular, and Goldeneye really come to the party.

A non-stop action spectacular, that avoids the classic Bond pitfall of going over the top, this film gave Pierce Brosnan's Bond a new, harder edge. A Bond film for the modern age, indeed. Mostly an action film, it never strays into that Roger Moore style of romp that one associates with classic Bond films.

This film compares well to the Daniel Craig era Bond films, and may even be better. Certainly it beats the slowish SPECTRE. All in all, 4.5 out of 5. It's made me decide on re-watching all the Brosnan era films, and rating them next the Craig films. Should be a mission.

Went out to see TGK when it opened. Pretty trippy movie about King Arthur's nephew on his hero's journey.

I watched JC twice in a couple of days when it opened. Started with the 2D version, decided to go for the IMAX show. Enjoyed it quite a bit, its a fun movie. Dwayne Johnson was stupid, but enjoyable, and its the second best movie with Emily Blunt released this summer. Very strong The Mummy vibe in this movie.

Took the oldest nephew out last night to see TSS in IMAX last night. We both enjoyed the movie quite a bit, and stayed through the credits for the bonus at the end. I'll be going to see it again with the youngest nephew & the niece soon.

And Stillwater is still on the list to see.

So, back when I tried to watch Black Widow 3D the first time, it messed up twice in the first hour & I was given two rain check passes to use for the inconvenience. Used the first pass to go back for that movie, used the second to see Free Guy when it opened. And I went on to watch FG two more times, both in 2D, after that. Really enjoyed that movie, and I was able to take my sister & niece to see it, too.

Spent a Sunday off in Tyler & watched Stillwater and Respect. S was a slow burn family drama, Matt Damon was really good in it, too. Which was a good thing since he's in all but one little bit of the movie. R was an alright music bio, not the best ever made, but still enjoyable. Almost had the BigD theater to myself for it, but one other dude showed up during the trailers.

Did not care much for the latest from Hugh Jackman when I went to see it. I figured it would all turn out to be a dream, but instead it was worse, where a scene would be playing only for the character to be pulled out of the memory and into the present day just to be berated for obsessing on the past. Well, when you have access to a machine that will let you play your own history out, why not? Only downside I could see was that it was broadcast in the room being used.

Was curious about the sequel, so I bought DB on a five dollar DVD. That movie sure did take a turn midway through. I went ahead & checked out the sequel, and it, too, takes a turn, but also tried to redeem The Blind Man. Uhm, no. Dude was willing to hold women captive in his basement for months at a time. No redemption there.

TP was not as good as I had hoped it would be, but I still enjoyed it.

I rewatched the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy and The Amazing Spider-Man on Hulu. The second Raimi is still my favorite, love Doc Ock. Amazing still sucks out loud, almost as much as the third of the trilogy.

Finished watching The Sopranos via HBO Max, so I am all set for the prequel movie when it comes out next month.

Took the family - both sisters, two nephews, the younger nephew's wife, the niece, and the oldest nephew's best friend - to see Shang-Chi IMAX opening weekend. We all enjoyed the movie, and stayed for both bonus credit scenes. Went the next day on my own to see it in 3D. And went the following weekend to see it in BigD and 2D. By the time the 2D show ended, I was the only one left in the theater. Either everyone else had already seen the bonus scenes, or didn't know to stay for them.

Went out last night and watched Copshop. I did not watch the trailer before the movie, so glad I skipped it. All I knew going in was that it had Frank Grillo and Gerard Butler, and that was good enough for me. Fairly decent action movie, though I get the feeling quite a bit of it was filmed during Covid, since there's so much of it done with six feet or more of space between the different actors during the same scenes.

Will be going to see Cry Macho some time this week, and may go see Copshop again, since Tyler has a BigD option for it.

    The Quiet Man - DVD

Picked up a copy of Candyman (1992) for cheap at Wal Mart. First time watching it the other night, since I have gotten curious about the new one. Plenty of gore, spookiness, and bees where you would not expect bees to be. Not sure if I'll go to the theater for this new one, or just wait it out.

Went to AMC Lufkin Saturday night for the last show of the day of the newest from Clint Eastwood. Had the theater to myself, too. I don't know if it was lazy writing, or if Eastwood is showing his age, but that movie was very disappointing. But, if he keeps making them, I'll keep going.

Watched The Quiet Man for the first time ever Sunday morning. I've seen bits and pieces over the years, but have never sat to watch the whole thing through before. It was one of my brother in law Terry's favorites, and my sister wanted a copy for his memorial table, so I found one. And then I borrowed it to watch myself before giving it to her to keep. It was alright, not the best John Wayne movie ever. And I think watching it once was enough. I'll stick to his westerns, and the others that I enjoy from his career.

Took my teenage nephew & niece to see Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings BigD at AMC Tyler on Sunday afternoon. They both enjoyed the movie, it was my fifth, her second, but his first time viewing. And he had zero patience for all those credits to watch the bonus scenes. I made him stay for them, anyway.

Have a ticket reserved for Venom: Let There be Carnage IMAX on Thursday before work. Everyone else in the family wants to see it, too, but with work & school schedules, I'm thinking multiple viewings to get them all to it.
