Movie 2 TOS inspiration

So the speculation has it that the writers of the next film are considering Khan, or some other classic series villain as the antagonist of the next film. I for one would prefer that the films not be remakes of old episodes, or even touch on them.

I'm hoping for something with a good deal of action, but also where the Enterprise crew encounter something new and fantastic through exploration, as well as having them face a moral dilemma. That way the people who are fans only of the new film can appreciate what made TOS great.

Now, my question is If any classic episode were remade or reimagined for the next film, which one would you like to see? My choices, in order of airdate:

1. Balance of Terror, the only problem would be that it would be so similar to the first film.

2. Arena, moral issue, combat, new civilization. Only thing is that there was not much for anyone else besides Kirk to do in that episode.

3. The Doomsday Machine, which was so sweet. Reading the TNG novel "Vendetta" gave me a greater appreciation for the Doomsday machine. However, it seems that this would be more action than anything else.

4. The Apple. This would probably be my top choice. Have the alien computer be able to generate a ship for the Enterprise to fight so that Scotty, Chekov and Sulu have something to and send Kirk, McCoy, Spock and Uhura down to the planet.

What do you think?

If they HAD to touch upon an original series episode, Balance of Terror could be used as an awesome movie.

That said, I really hope they don't use anything from the series, and just make an entirely new, original story.

Oh, I also hope that they use an original story, I just decided to post a what-if, if we had to choose.

A balance of terror "style' of movie, hopefully with a different race than the Romulans, would be interesting, but the action in the original episode might be too tame for the target audience.

They should do a movie version of "A Piece of the Action". Pine should set out to make his gangster impression even more obnoxious than Shatner's.

I think either A Taste of Armageddon or The Ultimate Computer would be epic on the big screen.

One thing I want to see, upon first sighting, per Prime Spock's recommendation, Khans sleeper ship blown to bits!

^^^^^
This. A million times, this.

The only thing they'll get from doing a remake of an existing TOS story is one-hundred times the criticism they're already going to get from the die-hard Trek-purists.

Do something original, please.

Good call. :D

Of all the suggestions in this thread, I like mind control villains the best.

OldSpock: "If you see a big funnel thing that looks like it could eat a starship, run away"
nuKirk: "But what if it's going to destroy say the Rigel colony?"
OldSpock: "Irregardless, run away."
nuKirk: "Irregardless isn't a word."

Did Spock prime publish crib notes?

"If you see a big funnel thing that looks like it could eat a starship, run away"

Probably not. It's just something I wish for because Spock spilling all the beans regarding possible incidents seems like a good way to keep stories in the Nuverse fresh.

With Spocks debriefing, an adequately sized warp engine or equivalent could, prior to it killing anyone, be dispatched to intercept the planet killer and destroy it.

And since they know how to do that, there would still be an hour fifty five left to do another story. :D

Exactly. A neat way to homage the Original while still charting new paths.

As I originally said, about Khan's ship, I see the Enterprise cruising along when a crew member announces "Sir, I have a item on Mister Spocks 'list of dangerous items', (or whatever it would be called) to destroy on sight... It's the "Botany Bay". "Understood. Target that ship." "Ready sir." "Fire." Exterior shot - Botany Bay vaporizes & Enterprise flies though it's debris cloud towards uncharted adventure.

I like the idea of taking a short few moments to kill the planet killer. But Star Trek is about valuing life so I do object to vaporizing the Botany Bay. Instead they could tow it with a tractor beam and have them thawed out an awaken in a fortified prison.

I imagine oldSpock has quite a "to do list":

1) Keep high rated ESPers away from the Galactic Barrier

2) Tell the Antares to leave Charlie Evans where he is.

3) Warn the Psi 2000 team about a certain virus.

4) Peaceful first contanct with the First Federation and the Gorn.

5) Quarantine the space around Gothos.

6) Write up the rules for the Shore Leave Planet

7) Divert the Korby and Sandoval Expeditions. (Might be to late for Korby?)
