Most gruesome/gratuitous Red Shirt death?

In VOY: 'Faces', Lt. Peter Durst was killed, harvested for his organs, and had a Vidiian wear his face like a mask thinking it would impress B'Lanna, whom he had become infatuated with.

That was gruesome.

And only the second time an actor played two completely different characters in the same episode. (Sir Patrick Stewart did it first in "The Defector", and Jeffrey Combs did it in "THE DOGS OF WAR". I don't think anyone else did it dyring the Berman era.)

"AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD", and all because they didn't confirm there was a place for them to transport to.

Should be a safety feature inside the device that at least warns the operator that it is not a planet or solid surface.
Don't forget about the two red shirts that those two were supposed to replace! By the end of the episode, those two are completely forgotten about since Kirk orders the Enterprise to Starbase Four. Some redshirt deaths are bad, but four deaths caused by sheer neglect by the ship's own Captain is astonishing.

Since they were stranded in the deserted scientific colony, they had plenty of food and the pick of domes to live in. Not too shabby considering the fate of their peers.

Good point.

And we also don't know about their food supply. Could have been meager by the time of the episode.

That was gruesome, all right. Carved up like a roast and transplanted into a dozen sick Vidiians. Reminds me of the Unwind series.

I’m sure that argument would have brought Khan back to his senses over a decade later.

Though it was quick the Red Shirt hit by Vaals lightning was pretty impactful.

The lightning bolt was animated in such a way that it looked angry.

The death of Icheb in Picard was the most gratuitous and gorey thing I’ve ever seen on Star Trek. I despise Saw-type torture porn, so I nearly quit watching the entire series out of disgust over those two minutes.

Remmick is up there too, I guess. but the special effects weren’t particularly convincing back then so it looked like someone smashing a pumpkin on screen. When the episode was shown here on the BBC it was cut to within an inch of its life and somewhat incomprehensible.

It came across as mean-spirited.
