Most dated movies of any given decade?

Rÿcher

Fleet Captain
See, these movies all *scream* 90's in that you see one second of footage and know that they were made in the 90's.

Of the 1990's, I'd have to say "Singles", both "Wayne's World" movies, "Single White Female", "Reality Bites", "Mallrats", "Encino Man", "Clueless", "The Craft", "Clerks", "White Men Can't Jump", "Sleepless in Seattle", "House Party", "Heathers", "Airheads".

That's all I got for now.

I would have said 'Independence Day' was the most dated movie of the 90's. You'd never get away with a film like that these days.

Why?

Cheesy disaster movie feat cities destroyed?
- The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Aliens invading Earth?
- War of the Worlds (2005)

Post 9/11 New York destruction?
- Cloverfield (2008)

Michael Mann's style was the 1980s, so that explains Manhunter.

Also 80s. Black Rain. To Live And Die In LA. Poltergeist. Less Than Zero. Beverly Hills Cop. Used Cars.

90s. Bad Boys. Boomerang. Scream. Beautiful Girls.

70s. Annie Hall. 3 Days of the Condor. All the President's Men. French Connection. Shaft.

Literally. A movie like that couldn't have been done the way it was in the '80s and it and it wouldn't be done in the '00s.

You guys don't think very far back. Doesn't anyone watch classic films?

Billy Jack
Live and Let Die

1980s:

Less than Zero (and beautifully filmed)
16 Candles

I do but (collectively) we've had time to see what screams the earlier decades. What screams the later decades isn't material that's covered so well.

Harder to tell since we're still in the decade but I think it's safe to say Farenheit 9/11, Harold & Kumar's Escape from Guantanamo Bay, and Collateral Damage will fit the bill.

I watched White Men Can't Jump recently and it is absolutely hilarious to see all the fashions. I guess it took some time to transition from the '80's to what we typically think of as the '90's.

While I find all of the 6 Rocky films to be watchable and quite enjoyable (Rocky V, not so much...), the further up you get in the sequels, the more dated they look.

The original Rocky (1976) still has a timeless quality about it, but the 5 sequels have elements that stand out on screen, and date those movies as a product of their own times:

Rocky II: Trans Am, sweatband, Adidas logo and gear.
Rocky III: big hair, funky disco music, sweatband, Adidas logo and gear.
Rocky IV: The Cold War between the former Soviet Union and the United States, Paulie's robot, MTV style edit.
Rocky V: Tommy Gunn's mullet, M.C. Hammer/Marky Mark-esque early 90's rap theme, Don King-esque promoter boxing scandal, MTV style edit.
Rocky Balboa: videogame fight, hip hop, futuristic-looking glass building that is going to look dated in 30 years.

Of those, both Annie Hall and 3 Days of the Condor are still highly watchable without any glaring visual distractions of their time period, unlike say a film like Live and Let Die (1973).

^ I wouldn't say Live and Let Die is unwatchable, just that it betrays the time in which it was made. Nothing wrong with that, really...

I haven't seen very many John Hughs movies mentioned... movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and The Breakfast Club are very, very 80s. Home Alone feels quite early-90s, too, for that matter.

Used Cars is a classic. Repo Man, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, and Brainstorm are definitely dated to the 80's.

1970's ... Earthquake, Logan's run, Star Trek TMP

1980's on.. I stopped watching and went to the classics from 1930 to 1950's
