Most atypical sci-fi tv/movie popular characters!

What are some characters that become popular, even though on the surface, it would seem like they would only have niche appeal. 3 comes to mind for me.

1 Rodney McKay=Not many tv shows revolve around a nerdy character, much less a nerd that can be a asshole at times. He is proably my most favorite character of all-time in sci-fi tv and I know others love the character as well.

2 Data=Robot without emotions, sounds to sci-fiy that I am surprised casual fans warmed up the the character.

3 Laura Roslin=You jost don't see much love in sci-fi for older female types. Especially when there not even a action-hero. Roslin broke though the cluster to become really popular.

And yet, scifi is so often about oddball antiheroes that it makes sense that atypical characters become beloved by the fans.

Donna Noble in Doctor Who S4.

Played by the comedian Catherine Tate in the 2006 Christmas special, she was seen as being a shouty harridian and her announcement as S4 companion caused much dismay.

she then became hugely popular in the series as her character had grown and continued to grow and she's seen in some circles as the best companion in nuWho, despite being a 40 year old woman and not seen as attraactive by some.

personally, i was willing to see how it went, loved her and find her and CT both attractive...

^ Yeah, I liked Noble, too. She was a funny and very personable companion.

Spock was another popular SF character who didn't seem like he would catch on as big as he did.

Also, I was always surprised at how popular Boba Fett became in Star Wars. He had barely twenty minutes of screen time in both Empire and Jedi put together, you never saw his face (at least not until the prequels) and yet he was adored by millions.
