More Trek Novel Reprints!

Which seem really, really pointless.

Grabbed from here: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/The-Star-Trek-Books-Community/56764725440

Death In Winter by Michael Jan Friedman
Sins of Commission by Susan Wright
A Fury Scorned by Pamela Sargent, George Zebrowski
Her Klingon Soul by Michael Jan Friedman
Stargazer: Enigma by Michael Jan Friedman
The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing by Michael A. Martin MMPB

No insult intended to the authors but none of these are terribly rare or in need of reprint, at least IMHO.

I'd like to see some confirmation on that from a non-Facebook-y source.

Reprints are a numbers game. If the Pocket warehouses are empty of a particular title, and there are sufficient orders attempted by bookstores, and projected numbers agree that it's worth doing a reprint, then it gets approved. Some titles that are seemingly "rare" may still be in stock in various shops around the USA, therefore are not ordered in sufficient quantities to trigger the requirement of a reprint.

Sometimes a reprint is simply not economically viable. Remember the first "Mission Gamma"? Editor Marco Palmieri had managed to keep the price low for a book that was over three times the normal word count, and even though the print run of the following three books in the mini-series was increased, Book 1 did fall out of print rather quickly. Very frustrating! Then, when it and Book 2 were included in a trade omnibus reprint, it sold way below expectations. One would expect that such a "rare" title would have sold no matter what. (Although, the arrival of that omnibus reprint did result in the overblown prices of second hand MMPBs of Book 1 dropping dramatically.)

Also, Pocket might have other reasons for promoting the older titles of a particular author. Maybe Friedman, Wright and Sargent have new books coming out soon, and Pocket wishes to be ready for overflow sales onto those authors' backlists?

The Romulan War: Beneath the Raptor's Wing by Michael A. Martin MMPB

This is normal for a MMPB to be made of a trade.

No reprint of Reap the Whirlwind? My library's got a copy but I'm afraid some bastard's gonna steal it before I've read the preceeding novels.

Nobody deserves more Sins of Commission. Of all the numbered TNG's to rehash...:ack:

I'm pretty sure (I can't get to the S&S site right at this minute) that these are more of the odd trade paperback, pseudo-print-on-demand releases that first appeared last year (including RtW, by the way, KingDaniel)...

Makes sense then. There are still a lot of people out there who complain about the eBook reading experience, or refuse to try it, but want old titles - in mint condition.

Pocket/Gallery and the authors make absolutely nothing at all on second hand sales. This reopens the opportunity for author royalties to be made on old titles without the financial risk of a MMPB reprint.

I get that S&S want to use reprints to produce books in enough demand that they could make some money, but I am suprised that these are the books considered their best shot at profitable production....

Are these more of those old books that have been popping up on the S&S site over the past few months, or are they actually scheduled MMPB releases like Nightshade was last year?

As I said before, reprints are often flagged by requests from bookshops for backstock that cannot be filled because no copies remain in the warehouse. Friedman is a popular ST author, even if he doesn't always seem to be around here, and Wright and Sargent/Zebrowski may have other new (non ST) books coming out soon.

Zebrowski is off my radar normally, but he seems quite successful. He and Sargent are churning out SF prolifically.

It seems to be. "On demand" trades, which are more viable in shorter print runs.

So has anyone actually ordered any of these? I'm curious to know what they're like.

IIRC, someone mentioned a few months ago that, although they are trade-sized books, the text section doesn't fill the page well, ie. the gutters are too wide. Sounded like they got as much design attention as the recent eBooks. ;)

All Star Trek novels should be available. I'm sure there are many new fans who would like to read some of the masterpieces which were published when the series were aired.

Not to channel JWolf or anything, but there's one way in which they are all available - eBook.

Well, mostly all; VOY numbered novels 1-4 are still missing, but the rest seem to be there.
