A reliable source has told me some juicy info regarding this particular scene and how Kirk & Co. manage to save the (vulcan) day...

Honoring a centuries-long romulan tradition, Nero's drill takes AGES to power up, giving Kirk enough time to plant the bomb in the damned thing and blow it to smithereens!:rommie:

I do rank it last among the ten films, but it does have one redeeming value--the score. I quite liked it (enough to have picked it up on MCH hi-res SACD). And I've suffered through much worse movies than that one (Ballistic: Ecks vs Severs comes to mind, as well as The Blair Witch Project). And I look at it this way. The new movie will at least be better (probably) than the worst of the existing Trek films and that means it will at least be mediocre (rather than the "steaming pile of shit" some fear--I get the feeling they've not watched enough films/TV outside of Trek as there are some serious "steaming piles of shit" out there). While I'll be disappointed if the new movie is mediocre, I won't want to kill stray cats on the way home to work out my frustration or anything similarly outrageous.
