I am surprised Burnham, who will have served 6 years under Georgiou, becomes first officer for 1 year before the captain thinks "We should start talking about you having your own command."

Surprised in what way?

She's an officer (under Georgiou) for 5 years, then gets promoted to lieutenant commander. One year after that Michael is full commander and on the cusp of receiving her own command?*

I am surprised she would be ready for command after just 1 year as XO.

*Or, she is not on the cusp and Philippa wants to start grooming her for captaincy.

How soon was Will Riker offered his own command after being posted to the Enterprise?

...How soon was nuKirk? ;)

We don't necessarily know how long she was Acting XO before the incident in the novel - and I suspect you're right, Markonian, in that she means more grooming her for active command, maybe giving her more responsibility for leading diplomatic duties, leaving her in ultimate command of the ship for prolonged periods.

I've been in a similar position before with jobs - being told they wanted me to look at management work but knowing the move into management might be several months, or years, away as they tested me on various aspects of being a leader.

He was offered his own command before being posted to the Enterprise. As established in "The Arsenal of Freedom," he turned down the offer to command the Drake because he thought it would be better for his career to serve on the Enterprise.

And at the time, Riker had been out of the Academy for 7 years. So being ready for command after 6 years isn't out of the question.

Geordi jumps two ranks within the space of about twelve months, so it's possible that Burnham ran from Ensign to Lieutenant relatively quickly and has spent four/five years sitting at that rank as a Dept Head and Second Officer before being made Acting XO and recieving her Lieutenant Commanders bars as a result of her actions in the novel.

Okay, being promoted quickly has been established. But specifically going from XO to command? How long was Riker XO before he was offered the Drake?

Although Kirk (Kelvin timeline) going from Lieutenant (graduating rank) to CO is outstanding.

Well, we know he began serving on the Potemkin in 2361, was promoted from there to first officer of the Hood sometime thereafter, and was offered the Drake shortly before joining the Enterprise in early 2364. So we're probably talking less than 2 years as XO before getting offered a command.

We know he was still a Lieutenant in 2361 - and the First Officer of the Enterprise by 2364. Presumably promotion to First Officer of the Hood at some point after with a promotion to Lt Commander (and later Commander) before being offered command of the Drake.

So Riker jumps up two ranks in four years, and gets offered his own command in that timeframe too after a maximum of three years as XO (depending on when he joined the Hood after the Potemkin assignment in 2361).

In seven years from cadet to First Officer? Poor Harry Kim...
Even ignoring the extenuating circumstances that cockblocked Harry's career advancement, Riker was specifically on a fast track to command and therefore climbed the ranks a bit quicker than expected.

Although, in Trek XI Pike indicated it's common for officers to have their own command within four years after graduating the Academy.

Picard became captain of the Stargazer 6 years after graduation, although that was a forced advancement as a result of the captain and first officer being killed (actually pretty similar circumstances to Kelvin Kirk's promotion, though not as immediate). The novel Mosaic makes Janeway a contemporary of Riker at the Academy and puts her first command in maybe late 2364 or early '65, so maybe a year longer than it took Riker. So 7-8 years to earn a captaincy (as a posting if not a rank) isn't unusual.

Hi Chris--I know, it's unrelated, wrong post etc...But....I'm lovin' The Face of the Unknown Thanks!!

Just reading the info from TrekToday the plot sounds surprisingly like XCom Terror from the Deep :)

Want the book though, and I think I might just order them in English to get them early!

I'm looking forward to ordering this book and any other Discovery novels that come out next year.

I was just watching "Second Chances" lately, and I believe Troi mentioned Riker was promoted to Lt.Commander after the evacuation performed by the Potemkin (also has it ever been explained why the Potemkin and E-D needed to use transporters and wait the 8 years in between for a new window to open in the distortion field? Did the field affect the shuttles somehow? And how did the Federation establish a base/colony on that planet in the first place with such short windows?), because Thomas was talking to her about a vacation that he and she were going to have on Betazed, but Troi mentions that Will never appeared because he was promoted.

Edit: So Discover is in 2255? How is thT right after "The Cage", which from "The Menagerie" (13 years before 2266) would be in 2253? I'd say it's close, but that's still 2 years difference! (And I guessStarfleet changes its uniforms twice in that time! )
