'Monsters' dir. by Gareth Edward

a film that looks from the outside like an effects laden alien, action sci-fi movie a la Cloverfield or District 9, but is more than just that, it's also a love story, a road trip and a political satire. It's also brilliant.

Monsters is a very original take on a sci-fi idea that might be older than you think (I find myself staring at my copy of the original 'V' miniseries).

Review of MONSTERS

That description sounds great! :bolian::rommie:
6 years ago scientists on Earth discovered proof that there is alien life within our solar system. A space probe is sent to collect samples (from where? who knows, this movie isn't telling!) but on arrival back home it crashes over central America. The probe releases the samples which spawn... let me see if I can properly describe them: Absolutely enormous, skyscraper sized land-walking squids which wander around Mexico absent mindedly hurling cars around and smashing into buildings. Needless to say, this won't do, and the American army starts an aerial bombing campaign in an attempt to kill off this weird new race, which are already in their hundreds.

We invited them, they're huge, and they're... winning? It seems the bombing campaign has had as detrimental effect to the life the average Mexican as the Creatures have, and it also doesn't seem to be as effective at killing the beasts as they'd hoped either. But life goes on and as one character says, "Where would we go if we left anyway? This happens all the time, we just take our chances."

Squidbillies, the movie!

Maybe some Watchmen purists will have some squid monster footage to reedit into the Watchmen movie to make it "right".

I just saw a new trailer for this movie and I am really interested in seeing it now.

The trailer doesn't say anything about a release date though?

The movie will receive a limited release on October 29th. I guess I will have to wait for the DVD.

I have read that the monsters are like giant octopus and if that is true I will be disappointed with the design. But since I love giant monster movies I am still looking forward to this movie.

I would imagine that the media focus on this movie will be on the gigantic wall they build on the Mexican border to keep the aliens out, and how the American and Mexican authorities will do almost anything to keep the aliens at bay at the expense of the average person living in Mexico.

Looks cool though, I like how the aliens are supposed to behave like "real" animals and not malevolent beasts with purposeful intent. That was supposed to be Cloverfield's angle too, but it didn't really come off as such on screen.

I really enjoyed Cloverfield. Not seeing the monster frequently did give a sense of fear and excitement. But the problem is that sense of fear and excitement doesn't hold up on subsequent viewings. I think having more of a 'payoff"by showing the monster frequently will be better in the long run. I think a filmmaker can find a happy medium between keeping things suspenseful by now showing the monster and yet showing it more at different times in the movie for more satisfying payoffs.

I hope they make Cloverfield 2 someday.

Today when browsing the iTunes store, I was excited to see that Monsters is available to rent. However, it cost $9.99 (more than what a matinee would cost at my local theater). I'm not sure how many people would want to pay that much for it, but I thought I would let everyone know.

So yeah, I saw this last week. Pretty good movie, I'd say. That trailer is somewhat misleading, though: while it has its thrilling moments, it's definitely not a horror film or creature feature. It's more of a romance/road trip movie, against the backdrop of a land where giant alien creatures happen to roam. The whole extraterrestrial angle was largely just treated as an everyday thing, which is a perspective that I quite liked.

The movie is quite character-driven: we slowly get to know these two characters as they get to know each other, and throughout the film, come to realize what is missing in their lives.

The design of the creatures is generally squid-like, but with a bioluminescence somewhat reminiscent of jellyfish.

It's a quite remarkable-looking film, especially considering it was apparently made for just $15,000! The director, Gareth Edwards, was on hand for the screening, as were the two stars (who are a real-life couple), and they told the audience that the very small crew all wore multiple hats during this production. Also, many of the bit part actors were just locals that they met during their on-location shoots (in Mexico, Costa Rica, and other places... some really great scenery in this picture!).

Its released in UK cinemas today, and I just saw it this afternoon.

A bit shit.

Haha, yes my reviews are very extensive huh? I don't know, I know it wasn't supposed to be like Transformers or some big alien action movie, as of course if that's what you're wanting then this isn't the film for you. I'm fine with that, but I still thought this really wasn't all up to much.
Yes you can sing the praises of the director and how it was made on such a small budget with a tiny crew etc, and seriously I praise them because it does 'look' great.

But basically it's like Cloverfield but with more of the charatcers and less of the monsters. And anyone who's seen Cloverfield should know the characters is that are total prats. I just didn't care about these two people, they spend most of their time just fucking around.
"Oh we've just walked onto some missle test site or something, an alien warzone, shall we get the hell out of here?"
"Nah let's just wander around aimlessly, staring at the big squids when we could be getting the heck out of there."

Also I'd say that was one of the worst endings I've ever seen. I couldn't believe that was it when it fading to black, I couldn't help but utter the words "what a load of shit" in the theater. From the response I think most agreed.

God, 2010 has a been a pretty poor year for movies I have to say. I've seen about 40 at the cinema so far this year, and only about 2 or 3 I thought were great, and 5 maximum I would watch again.
Suffice to say this wasn't one of them.

This seems to be getting rave reviews, so I'm sure people will say I'm in the wrong, but whatever. There's nothing new here at all, seen it all before
