Monster Ark

Nedersong

Captain
Okay, I just finished watching this movie after a friend loaned me his DVD of it.

I personally consider it the first Christian based horror movie that I'd personally ever seen.

The premise of the movie revolves around Noah's Ark in that he actually built two arks, the first one failed, but was used to imprison a powerful and invulnerable demon that the only way to imprison it was by finding Noah’s Staff and thrusting it through the demon's heart and reimprisoning it in the ark.

The main characters are a husband and wife team of archeologists and two students. They broke up when he was falsely accused of sexually harassing a student and his wife didn't believe him, so she left him. It opens up with him and his students finding a never before discovered cave at Qumran, where the Dead sea Scrolls were initially found.

He takes the scroll to his wife because she's the only one with the resources to translate the ancient writing and they find out the location of Noah's Ark through it. And of course they go out to find it and team up with a unit of soldiers who think the area is being used to hide WMDs because the area is used by terrorists and is a dead zone for communications.

So they are sent with the soldiers. Along the way they have an argument over faith because she’s a big believer in God and he’s an empirical scientists, and the arguments ends with him stating that “we broke up because you had no faith in me”.

When they find the location they find the ark, it’s not a ship but the kind of ark that is carried on the shoulders. The soldiers threaten to open it up with explosives right away if the archeologists don’t open it up quickly, so they use a laser to open it up. Inside is the demon and it escapes going on a killing spree.

While the soldiers hunt it, they find out that only Noah’s staff can put it back into prison and is the only thing that can stop it. They find the location of the staff in a tomb from another scroll and are confronted by other soldiers of a super-secret and all power Illuminati type secret organization. While in the tomb the creature attacks the husband tries to escape but a pit opens up below him. He grabs on to the ledge to keep from falling to his death but the creature falls into the deep pit.

He prays to God and escapes the death trap. When he emerges they all join forces to find the staff. They find the staff in a crypt in a church, but at first it is hidden and he finds it because he is the only one who has the faith it is there. find the location of the staff in a crypt of a knight. It is hidden under a bunch of dust and he’s the only one who finds it because he’s the only one who believes it’s there.

After he finds it they use the staff the to imprison the creature in the ark and the world is saved.

He is given membership in the organization and is allowed to keep the staff because of his faith.

End spoilers.

So this is why I believe it is the first pro-Christian horror movie I've ever seen, because the main character who is a scientist who at first cannot believe in God because there is no empirical evidence and his ex-wife is pushing him to find his faith and has absolutely no respect for him what-so-ever because he doesn't believe. Then he encounters the monster, and when he prays to God and is saved from the pit, he finds his faith and becomes a true believer.

Although it does rewrite the Bible a bit in presenting this premise, which is sure to anger many Christians.

Can a film based on Noah's Ark be called "Christian-based?" After all, that's an Old Testament myth predating Christianity. And it's based in turn on the Utnapishtim myth from the epic of Gilgamesh (which was also adapted by the Greeks into the myth of Deucalion and Pyrrha). A lot of stuff in the OT (including Genesis 1 & 2) is actually Sumerian mythology with the polytheism edited out.

I think I saw a promo for this movie on SciFi. Isn't Renee O'Connor in it?
