Monopoly City- first impressions

Flying Spaghetti Monster

Vice Admiral

Hey there!
So last night my buddy picks up this version of Monopoly that I guess is reletively new. We are both fans of the original game and decided to give this game a run through. The idea is that you can build up the properties moe, because they are now called districts, and you can add syscrapers, stadiums, jails, sewers and schools. So here are some points about the game:

- The names of the districts are really cheesey. "Boardwalk" is Fortune Valley and Park Place is Diamond Hill or soemthing. Well, all the new property names are just as cheesey.

- My favorite new rule is that if you build a stadim on your property, you increase your eactual earnings (what youy get from the bank after passing "Go"

- I hate the spiteful nature of the new rules. You can land on these blue spaces wehre the RR's used to be and now they give you the option of placing a school or something on your space, which prevents a factory from being placed on your space, or you can place a factory on an opponents space. Sure the old Monopoly was competitive, but it was rarely so directed in the way you can "attack" other players".

- On that note, there is a new Chance card that allows you to steal a dstrict from a player. This card is way off-balance in the scope of a Monopoly Game.

- The new railroads suck. Sure reading about it, it certainly soun ds cool... building a railroad allows you to transport your piece to another spot with a railroad. Sounds cool.. but it really is cheesey when in the middle of a game.

- Oh, there are no friggin' "monopolies" in the game

It sounds interesting, but it also sounds like the board needs to be twice as big to accommodate all the extra stuff!

Actually, the board is the same size, I think. What is different this time is that the cetner of board contains a map of the various districts, and it is there at you can place your various buildings. To see it on YouTube, click HERE.

Great stuff, so there's a board full of those skyscrapers, someone knocks the board, they all go tumbling over and nobody knows who has what where and you have to piss about standing them all back up every two minutes.

From what I've heard, this one suffers from the same problem basic Monopoly does: relatively early in the game, someone gets just enough of an advantage to begin winning, and then everyone else gets caught-up in a slow, painful war of attrition for the next two hours.

I got the game for Christmas and both times I've played I started out slow and later won the game despite the appearance of me losing at first.

I enjoy the game, but its probably because I have the mixed love of simcity and monopoly. True it can be a little hostile with placing sludge plants on other peoples property, but they can pay to have it removed.

Still. I liked the game. I can't wait to play it again.

:borg:

I don't think the malicious aspect of the game (places sludge on others' property) is befitting the game of monopoly. And the "steal" card is way out of line!

While I will probably stick with basic Monopoly, this sounds like something my group would be into. We don't play friendly, happy Monopoly. We play mean, smack-mouth, manipulative, screw-the-opposition-into-the-best-deal-for-me Monopoly, and this sounds like that sort of game.

There are other ways to play Monopoly?
You know, I didn't think so either, but everyone who I play with who isn't part of the normal group keeps implying that we're too mean and aren't playing it right. I think they just need to man up. ;)
