Twilight is in charge of the Summer Sun celebration, and she's handling everything with peak efficiency. Luna and Celestia are surprised at this, because Twilight's usually a freak-out mess trying to organize and plan.
Meanwhile, in Grogar's Lair, Chrysalis, Tirek, and Cozy Glow plot how to acquire the book that explains the history behind Grogar's Bell, the enchanted item that gives him all of his power.
So far, though she seems to be handling things well, insisting that she has changed (aside from a trivia trot contest, which she freely admits). Meeting up with her friends, she prepares to give them their assignments. Of course, Rainbow Dash's mantra of "no work" and sudden disappointment when Twilight has work for them made me laugh. Good ol' Dash. Anyway, so she gives them index cards with their assignments, which is a surprise because usually Twily has a list a mile long for each of them. Again, Twilight mentions she has been changing, and doesn't freak out like she did before. Even Discord gets to participate, and once receiving his index card, pops them off to get to work.
Back with our villainous trio who are now in Canterlot, they see ponies preparing for the Summer Sun Celebration, and plot to find a way inside, as security has clearly changed. After a few failed attempts, they decide distracting ponies is easier than just sneaking in because that has proven ineffective up to this point.
Tirek sets about using his magic sucking powers to drain several ponies in order to make it appear that the food has gone bad. Cozy Glow convinces the Canterlot weather manager to let her handle the details while he handles the big picture, and sets off to create chaos. Chrysalis tries to pose as a royal guard, but is unable to breach the security systems. However, before long everything has started to roll downhill because of the chaos set into motion, and they distract a guard long enough to knock them out and take their ID badge which gives them entry into the castle.
Back to our Mane Six, and Spike, we see them desperately try to undo the chaos, and the damage, and are overwhelmed. They try to unsuccessfully hide it from Twilight believing she will freak out, but it isn't long before she discovers what is going on outside the castle walls. She confronts her friends and they tell her they've been trying to repair the damage before she can find out so she doesn't freak out due to the chaotic mess that has become the preparations for the Summer Sun Celebration.
PLOT TWIST!
Twilight doesn't freak out at all! Instead, she handles things calmly, delegating responsibilities to her friends, who end up being the ones that actually start freaking out. Instead of telling her what was happening, though, they tried to fix it themselves, making the situation worse. Twilight finds this out and gives them a bit of a lecture on how they need to trust her, which they acknowledge.
They set about fixing everything with the help of Luna and Celestia, too. As a result, everything is back in order and the Summer Sun Celebration goes off without a hitch. Twilight makes a surprise announcement that there will be no more Summer Sun Celebrations, because the Princesses are together again. Instead, she's creating a new holiday for that day, and calling it the Festival of the Two Sisters, to the surprise and cheers of everypony. A pony pile of hugs from her friends is the end result.
Anyhoo, Tirek, Chrysalis, and Cozy Glow get the book from the Canterlot archives, and return to Grogar's Lair. He believes he's found where the bell is, and will set off to find it, giving the trio time to learn how to use it for themselves. I'm curious to see how that will turn out in the episodes ahead.
This was a nice mix between a good slice of life episode, and an adventure that also starts the buildup to the finale. Twilight has definitely matured, and it shows that even though minor details can send her into a tizzy, when it comes to the big things, she has things well in hoof. Even Discord acknowledges this.
This episode gets a solid B+.
