MLP:FiM 2x18 "A Friend in Deed"

"When Pinkie Pie meets Cranky Doodle Donkey, she becomes flummoxed about what to do when the donkey refuses her usual offer of lifelong friendship, so she must decide what to do next about the first creature ever to do such a thing."

And the poll option fucked up so put the A,B,C,D or E at the top of your post and we'll figure it out later.

Well, the beginning was somewhat disturbing (because i thought that was what Pinkie was doing every morning before going out - training to be as crazy and happy as she is) but also funny.

I was also glad to see them back. And it seems my first impression wasn't so wrong, after all, judging from the song (which I like).

I switched off the stream mow, though, because the picture is lagging behind the sound and I hate that with a passion. I'll be back later with my comments on the episode.

Oh Gep lol, I love the twins, but they do tend to wreck all kinds of havoc. :D

That was one huge shoutout to the secondary characters there, even Zecora and another new Donkey.

And song! :D

A+++

Wow... that episode was so much fun, and it was especially nice to see Pinkie learn that just because someone isn't cranked up to 11 like her doesn't mean they don't like her. The song was a lot of fun, as was the inevitable riffs on "Yankee Doodle Dandy" (sadly, The Hub cut into the closing credits, where they were playing it on piano in lieu of the theme song) and I especially loved all the Pinkie Pie randomness throughout. I mean, flannelgraphs?

edit: And how could I forget Derpy in a snowglobe!

OMG, Dash hanging at the library, reading Daring Do. It's full of continuity today.

I'm not sure if that was an A or a B. It would have been an A, except Pinkie winning him over at the end was a trifle too pat. I was really hoping the lesson would be her learning that you can't force everybody to like you. But the Pinkie Pie orthodoxy will accept no deviation, and apparently the show endorses that. Oh well. (I did like Twiight's exasperated headdesk when Pinkie set off to apologize, though.)

A couple other thoughts:

  • The show really goes out of its way to use euphemisms for (euphamise?) romance. Heaven forbid we call it what it is. Strange that we live in a culture which pushes love and marriage as a valuable goal for girls yet is terrified of naming it directly. Bwah?
  • With funerals canonized last week and the reappearance and naming of the priest pony this week, I was sure Cranky's secret was that his girlfri...I mean "special friend" was dead. That would have taken balls.
  • Also, Pinkie: shut up.
  • She's fun as a character, but I find myself siding with Cranky's desire to have nothing to do with her. She's so pushy and annoying that if she showed up IRL, I'd tell her to fuck off, too.
  • No, seriously. Shut up.

Wow... that episode was so much fun.

Yes! we had like 4 songs and "Smile, smile, smile" was amazing. Even the end credits had her CDD song.

Derpy was in the snowglobe, doing a little flip when Pinkie shook it.

Soooo many other characters including most of ponyville with several new characters during the songs, even more of the town council. Ponies, Zebras, Donkeys, Cows all in one episode, not sure we've ever seen that before.

A+ easily.

Total A+ for me. And Pinkie mentioned lost love!!! This was absolutely darling. And Pinkie's song... how can you listen to that without smiling?

It's a B for me.

I did love all the little continuity things and especially the cow from season 1 reappearing and Dashie reading Daring-Do in Twilight's library. The song was great, too. I loved the different animations we got, especially the flannelgraphs and the old film flashback.
But like Gep I often find Pinkie to be too hyperactive and annoying. We've already seen some of the dark sides of this - like her fear that she isn't loved by anyone which is probably what drives her behaviour. I found the first scene of the episode slightly disturbing because it seemed like Pinkie is exercising her expressions and is only wearing a mask of hyper, happy Pinkie outside which is what I always suspected her of doing. So much happiness isn't natural. I appreciated the insights into her character we got in this episode but I think the lesson should have been that you can't be friends with everyone and that you should give people their room to breathe and lay it off when they make it clear that you're bothering them. Maybe she did learn at least that in the end but I don't think so. I also disliked some of the animation being so over the top during Pinkie's stalking of Cranky and at the end with her 'exploding'. The show sometimes does that (it also happened in Lesson Zero with crazy Twilight) and it bugs me.

I want that snow globe! It would make for a cool piece of merch. :D

I loved it! And I waited to hear the song "Smile" in the actual episode, and it was worth it! It really is a great song. :D

Everything from the cake twins to Pinkie dressed as a beaver, and everything in between was wonderful. Loved the old fashioned animation with Cranky and Matilda, squee'd when I saw Dashie hanging out with Twilight reading a (Daring Do!) book. Loved seeing all of the secondaries get a couple more moments in the Sun. Terrific episode! Easy A for me! :D

Hehe, yeah the reading date was cute :)

You all make Pinkie sad.

I give her a hug once she breaks the fourth wall for good and becomes real. ;)

By the way, I loved the short scene (I think it was during the smile song) where she and Ponyville are abstracted and we only see their outlines. Is there a clean HD screencap of that? It would make for a great wallpaper.

Ponychan is still processing the HD screencaps, they should have the episode done by midnight my time, the next three hours or so.

Yeah, and hopefully someone will find a way to remove the logos because they were very noticeable today, and I'd like some of those screencaps as wallpapers myself (love the Pinkie/Applejack moment at the barn).
