The Padres got a steal for two-plus seasons of Juan Soto.

All teams now have the DH, but the Jays have a DUSH.

The Braves made a bunch of small trades to try out new stuff in the relief corps and the outfield, but the biggest takeaway is that Robinson Cano is probably going to have to retire now. He looked lost on the diamond.

You're never going to get equal value for a player of Soto's caliber (to say nothing of Bell, either), but looking through it, the return isn't too bad. CJ Abrams was listed as the ninth-best prospect in all of baseball, and he's only 21. MacKenzie Gore has been wildly inconsistent in the majors, but when he's on, he's on. Hassell has excellent walk and strikeout rates and has shown some impressive raw power in the minors. James Wood was listed as San Diego's #3 prospect going into the season, and he's only 19 with massive upside. Jarlin Susana is definitely a lottery ticket and probably best projects as a reliever, but he could be a damn good one.

Trading for a prospect is almost the same gamble as drafting him. No way to know how any of them will turn out until they're on the field. Anyone remember Kyle Drabek, Dustin Ackley or Bubba Starling? Meanwhile, Tommy Lasorda drafted Mike Piazza with the 1,390th pick as a favor to Piazza's father.

Yeah, it's a crapshoot; even can't-miss draft prospects like Mark Prior (who was considered the best pitching prospect in recent history, but his arm fell off) sometimes just don't make it in the show, be it due to injuries, mental makeup, bad luck, whatever. But it's a pretty decent haul of prospects for Washington, who have a badly depleted farm. It's not unlike the load of players the Cubs got for Rizzo, Bryant and Baez last year, which did a pretty impressive job of re-stocking a Cubs farm system that was barren after the trades for Aroldis Chapman, Jose Quintana and others in 2015 - 2017.

Pirates beat the Brewers 5-4 in ten innings, and complete their first sweep of a series since August 2020 (when, funny enough, they swept the Brewers).

    Boston releases Jackie Bradley Jr.

    Philadelphia releases Didi Gregorius.

Milwaukee releases Dinelson Lamet, who they just got from San Diego in the Josh Hader trade.

Cubs and Cardinals will play in London on June 24-25, 2023.

They can't freely option him to the minors because he just reached five years of MLB service. If he clears waivers, they can ask him if he wants to be sent down.

Yeah, I get that but why trade for him only to immediately drop him?

That doesn't make any sense because they traded for him. I guess I'm being obtuse.

But then everything with salaries and contracts and other bullshit in sports and particularly baseball doesn't make any sense to me either, so whaterver.
