Mixed sexes in shared quarters?

In Franz Joseph's tech manual and blueprints, junior officers share quarters, 2 each. Not sure if junior officers' quarters were ever shown in TOS itself (although STVI and VOY: "Flashback" showed them sleeping in bunks on the Excelsior), but for the sake of argument let's say it's accurate. Would the sexes be segregated, or would assignments be handed out gender-blind?

In NuBSG different sexes shared quarters and bathroom facilities. Although the censors would never have allowed it, realistically speaking, it's doubtful Federation crew would give it a second thought.

Except in the Kelvin timeline.

In an enlightened future, it seems like it would be a non-issue.

I slightly disagree. Due to the simple fact of biology there will be certain differences between how men and women go through their daily lives. This has to be recognised. The question is the extent to which privacy is necessary. I think the answer to that will always depend on the social attitude one applies to such situations. Perhaps by the 21st Century, to put it bluntly, we'll be shitting and pissing ourselves in front of one another in spite of gender, because it's no longer seen as a taboo to do so. Conversely, perhaps the view will be that the diversity of biological gender differences will be such that division is still arguable.

Well it hasn't happened yet, I think....Is this something we should keep an eye out for?
Wait... Were we not supposed to be doing that?

Sorry, everyone!

Some areas have started to have mixed restrooms. But there are still individual stalls. It isn't all out in the open!

I know the novels have occasionally shown mixed gender roommates on Trek. Didn't Picard have a male and a female roommate in the Academy? I could swear we've seen men and women rooming together on tv but maybe that's just my imagination filling in the blanks. Either way when your roommate could be an alien with totally different gender and biology it's hard to imagine that anyone would think twice about a man and a woman being roommates.

If you're thinking of the episode "Tapestry," then I believe that those two were just friends with Picard. Although the female friend did spend the night, that wasn't exactly a roommate situation. ;)

If it's just two sharing a room, I think they'd be segregated by sex. If it's a bunch of bunkbeds like WW II era enlisted quarters, maybe they could share, but just maybe.

It will likely continue as long as reproduction is necessary for the continuation of the species and boys and men are visually and involuntarily wired for quick and opportunistic arousal.

I don't see why you can't mix sexes. the bathroom has a door, so it's not as if the person using it would be exposed. I shouldn't think it's a big deal by then.

I just grabbed my tech manual (too lazy to pull out the blueprints)
Ah, how awesome was franz Joseph ?
Anyway, I note that even in the single stateroom, he has the bathroom shared between two officers.

There's the social mores of the individual to consider too. Officers and crew are going to be coming from a lot of different species and different cultures, the expectation that they're all going to have one culture is really not a expectation at all.

Mixed gender living arrangements could be objectionable to many, and that their room mate was the same as they perfectly reasonable. You shouldn't be expected to abandon who you are and what you believe just by joining Starfleet

Didn't VOY have mixed quarters in "Good Sheperd" or am I misremembering?

Oh I guess they weren't shown as mixed, that lower decks woman talked to the dude via intercom, he wasn't her roommate

And people think the chief engineer and CMO have all the headaches! Imagine being the quartermaster and having to coordinate everyone's preferences and needs! Though, doubtless, they would have to consult with both these senior officers in matters of accommodation and medical requirements. Headaches all around.

But I think people would be allowed to do whatever they most feel comfortable with, in most cases unless lives are at stake.
