Mitt Romney refuses to sign anti-gay marriage pledge

Mitt Romney is looking more and more like the most 'mainstream,' Republican challenger for President Obama and likely the most difficult for Obama to defeat in 2012.

Romney was a supporter of many gay rights as governor of MA and on many of the issues mirror's Obama's position.

MSNBC

DES MOINES, Iowa — Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney's campaign said Tuesday that he will not sign a conservative Iowa Christian group's far-reaching pledge opposing gay marriage, making him the first Republican presidential candidate to reject it.
Two of Romney's rivals for the Republican nomination, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, have signed the The Family Leader's 14-point pledge, which calls on the candidates to denounce same-sex marriage rights, pornography, same-sex military accommodations and forms of Islamic law.

Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for Romney, told The Associated Press in a written statement Tuesday that Romney "strongly supports traditional marriage," but that the oath "contained references and provisions that were undignified and inappropriate for a presidential campaign."

An honorable thing for him to do. Let's hope that those who do sign that abominable screed marginalize themselves out of contention, even in Iowa.

Stephen Colbert last night had a lot of fun on this show with regard to this pledge and specifically Michelle Bachman's signature on it.

Several people on the MSNBC website echo the response:

At least one of the Republican canidates has some class and shows some respect for the office and the its responsibility to be the President for ALL the people.

Romney did the right thing by not signing this joke of a pledge, but it will cause the TP to hate him more, and help destroy his chances. The Repub. party is toast.

Good move by Romney. This is a stupid issue. I am sure he doesnt support gay marriage but is smart enough to know that this isnt the big issue facing this country so why waste time

Well, as far as I can determine, Mitt is the only Republican in the current field who hasn't revealed himself to be a certifiable loon - not just with regard to this issue, but to others as well. I mean, over the past 6 months, people like Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin, Newt, and Donald Trump have worked enormously hard to set the bar astoundingly low.

Glad to see he's not completely insane, though I still wouldn't vote for him unless he was running against, say, Hitler.

If Mitt gets the nomination the question remains will it fracture the Republican party with his mainstream views or will they hold the party together? The sense I'm getting listening to the Hannity show on my drive home nightly is that he's at best a "hold your nose and vote for him" candidate for the far right of the party and some of the tea party folks.

Are you going to commit to Mitt as much time and money as you committed to Obama?

I haven't yet decided who I'm going to vote for. But if the economy still sucks in 2012, unemployment is still around ~9% and little has changed in our multiple wars [ya know troops still in Iraq despite his pledge otherwise - troops still in Afghanistan - a lingering conflict with Libya etc] it may be time to take a serious look at Romney if he's going to paddle down the mainstream creek.

Romney by himself wouldn't be a total disaster. What does concern me is the possibility of a Republican president implicitly increasing the power of the crazies in the House right now.

Though nowhere near as high in the polls as Romney, Jon Huntsman Jr. has long been a supporter of civil unions and has also refused the pledge. He created a bit of a stir in Utah when he was first elected governor by inviting the partners of the two or three gay legislators to an official dinner. When some people expressed shock, he basically said "How could I not invite them?"

Good for him. Romney is about the only current Republican candidate I would even consider supporting right now.

I'm ashamed that this pledge comes from my home state. Though, we are one of the few states in the union where gay marriage actually is legal, even if the bigots are trying their hardest to change that.

Mitt Romney like or dislike and to his credit or discredit is a master at riding the political tight rope of "I was against it before I was for it and now I'm for it after I was against it."

But as President, Obama has proven to be no different.

Good for Mitt, but I still can't vote for someone that made his money from leverage buyouts.

It's much more likely that Romney has mainstreamed himself out of contention among the Republican base voters who control the primaries.

It's not "gay marriage", it's letting gay marry. Let's get the terms right.

And gays who marry are in a...

...marriage.
