I read at some point that Shatner was never happy with his narration. He recorded it several times and never felt he got it right. But it always sounded just right to me, in the original versions.

Maybe if there'd been a fourth season, they would have had Leonard Nimoy take a crack at it. That would have been a jarring and awesome change, but Bill would not have liked it.

CBS Digital had a hard time finding a clean, voice-only narration to combine with their new main title recording, but they finally found one. I don't think it was quite as good as the original.

Yeah me neither, TBH. It was appropriate in Star Trek's II and III but for the TV series? Nope, that's was Shatner's job as the lead and the captain.

"Awesome" is really the wrong word, but you got "jarring" right.
