Wow, Auntie, that was close!
And my apologies for the delayed reply - our dog fell seriousely ill on Friday and I nursed the old chap till he had to be put to sleep on Sunday, so that I wasn't online all the weekend.
My mom had a good idea for the next contest: favourite thing you kept from your childhood (toys, books, clothing, bad habits, whatever)

He would have turned 13 in August which is unusually old for a German Shepherd. Few of them survive the 10th year. In human years he was about 90. We've seen that coming for quite some time: he had a huge spleen tumor and prostate problems and was too old to survive a surgery, but as long as he was not in pain (and athletic enough to chase the postman, heehee
) we saw no reason to make an end. This weekend, however, his kidneys were on the verge of failing and since that would have been a very painful end we decided to let him go. Fortunately, his favourite vet was on weekend duty but even she sniffed when she gave him the fatal injection.
Atm the whole family is online, checking pet asylums for a large elderly dog, preferably some hunting or shepherd breed. We have 7 favourites so far and I'm curious which one my parents will pick. Very likely one that's not on the list
