Mirror Mirror

Okay, this is a favorite. But they could have had two really good episodes or more. One would have been the alternate Kirk talking his way out of the brig. Or better yet as soon as he gets out of the transporter, he says to our Spock, aim phasers on the Hulkan City. Spock's reaction would have been very good.

And then years later the alternate Kirk tries to take over our galaxy. Anyway I think one of these was done on that fan made video.

Just a few random thoughts.

I'm sure Spock immediately recognized that the MU characters were from another universe. Given how angry they all were in the brig, Spock must have instantly sussed them out.
It was obviously quick, however he did it, as I think Spock is throwing them into the brig 15 minutes into the episode. I imagine that Mirror Kirk might've made it as far as the bridge and then ordered the Enterprise to open fire on the Halkans. That wouldn't go over well.

That would make a cool comic book project. “Lost Scenes” from favorite episodes.

Yeah, whenever I rewatch "Mirror, Mirror" I want to see more of what the MU Kirk and crew did in the Prime Universe and what exactly they did that tipped Spock off. I know the story isn't about that, but it would've been fun to see. :)

Spock Prime must have noticed the abnormal Transporter readings and investigated the crap out of it while we weren't looking, because the only thing you could reasonably conclude from the landing party's behavior was that they were mentally disturbed, paranoid, or possibly even commuters on the Los Angeles freeway.

I myself would have been wrapped up in theories about a Halkan pathogen or pollutant, or (obviously) Transporter psychosis. But I am not Spock.

I honestly don't know if there were any abnormal transporter readings. Mirror Spock didn't note any, and I assume the two Spocks are of similar intelligence. And Spock Prime entered the transporter room after transport had already begun, so I assume Mirror Spock likely did the same. Because if Spock had noted anything severely amiss beforehand, he likely would've advised Kirk to wait to beam up.

But yeah, it makes sense that Spock Prime would've taken a closer look at the transporter circuits after the Mirror crew was safely locked up and deduced what happened. Maybe he even checked his findings with the Enterprise computer the same way Kirk did in the MU. Somehow he figured out that the Mirror crew should be taken to the transporter to exchange places with their counterparts, but I imagine all he could do after that was hope that Kirk and Scotty figured things out on their end.

It was this exchange:

KYLE: The power beam jumped for a moment, sir, as the landing party was about to materialize. I never saw it happen before.
SPOCK: Due to your error, Mister Kyle?
KYLE: No, Mister Spock. Before.
SPOCK: Possibly a result of the severe storm. Captain, do you feel any abnormal effects?

Spock Evil shrugged it off, while Spock Prime sunk his teeth into it and did the science. That's how Spock Prime figured out there was a Mirror Universe, while Spock Evil had to be told.

There were, a fluctuation was what got Kyle the Agonizer, IIRC.

I suppose this depends on whether or not you think the power beam jumping for a moment results in any abnormal readings. Kirk says, "Spock was right; That was a rough beam up," but he doesn't seem to act like it's anything unusual until he looks out from the platform and sees Mirror Spock and Mirror Kyle performing a Nazi style salute to him.

Honestly, before that Kirk just seemed to be treating the beam up as the equivalent of hitting a few potholes during a car ride or your plane encountering a bit of turbulence. Less than ideal, but nothing unusual.

Maybe this episodes tells us that Spock can't be really bad ;)
Well, let's remember that Mirror Spock apparently had no moral objections to the torture and planetary destruction the Empire regularly engaged in. He only considered overthrowing the Empire after Kirk convinced him it would be illogical not to. Even though Kirk says, "You're a man of integrity in both universes, Mr. Spock," I bet he'd be horrified if he knew the full extent of the evil stuff Mirror Spock had been up to.

There's a nice moment in John Byrne's Star Trek New Visions story that followed up on "Mirror, Mirror." Mirror Spock casually mentions some evil thing or another the Empire did, and Prime McCoy says, "Dammit, Spock! You've got to stop referring to genocide like it's policy!"

(Quoting the dialogue from memory, so I may be a bit off on the wording.)

It’s one of the great ‘just trust Spock’ moments of TOS.

Kirk and co… finally it occurs to them that evil counterparts of themselves are in the Prime Universe… it seems like it could be a worry and…

Spock has them all behind a force field. Classic moment. Very funny and also just highlights how smart and reliable Spock is.

I think he threw them in the Brig about 3-5 minutes after they stepped off of the transporter pad. He probably kept them talking as he led them there and then just shut them the fuck in.

Done!
