Miri

It’s just an ‘okay’ episode in my opinion. It has some good scenes in it and other moments that are unintentionally laughable. I would give it 2 out of 5 stars.

Three hundred years only surrounded by other preteen children. Seeing friends regularly hit puperty and go batshit crazy. No entertainment and no mental stimulation other than your own "foolies".
I am not at all surprised that Miri & Co were more than a little kookie.
Just take out the "identical to Earth" schtick and then, imho, not one of the best episodes, but certainly not one of the worst.

I just watched Miri, with the Grups. I thought it was pretty interesting. What did you think?
It definitely is interesting in many ways. There are some flaws, like the "identical Earth", but that setup creates an interesting story, and it even become more relevant in today's COVID-19 times. What? A virus that kills the older people and spares the youth? Hmmm.

My favorite part is the end where Kirk keeps trying to use logic to convince the children, but in the end he turns to an argument that appeals to their emotions.

Indeed! In fact the first thing I thought of when lockdown happened here in the UK with deserted streets, was "Miri"!

The main story regarding the disease is good, but the "identical Earth" thing is unnecessary, and essentially ignored after the teaser.

That being said, the idea of "identical Earths" is kind of cool, but for it to work they should keep continually discovering them (say one or two a season) and it becomes apparent that it's some kind of weird advanced alien experiment with humanity - maybe our heroes themselves maybe start to wonder if they're from the true Earth.

Ultimately, they sort of did it with the various "planets of hats" anyway, just dropped the physical identicalness of the planet itself, which is probably how they should have done it in "Miri".

Yeoman Rand : “Earth!”
Kirk : “Not the Earth, another Earth. Another Earth!”

I love how Spock rattles off all of the technical data about the "mean density" and planet circumference and Rand yelps "EARTH!" Like, you KNOW this? Brilliant. I mean, if she was looking at the viewscreen and saw North America (sans clouds), I'd get it...

There aren't any episodes of Star Trek that I hate, but there are a handful that annoy me and this one and Charlie X tie for most grating episodes of the first season. Always in the bottom batch for me.

I read a novel a few years back that mentioned that the planet was from another universe and came through some sort of rift. Similar to that Orville episode. I always liked that explanation as to why it looked like Earth. I always found that odd that they did that but didn’t go into any further detail why. Could have easily removed that and the story would have still worked.

I absolutely agree the episode would have been far better if it weren't an exact duplicate of Earth. I hear the novelization of the episode blatantly contradicted that, described the planet as a forgotten colony world, and gave plenty of details of its geography and continents that bare no resemblance to Earth's.

An episode about an exact duplicate of Earth should be about the mystery of why it's an exact duplicate of Earth.

I can honestly tell you that when I break out the S1 DVD, the track that has ‘Miri’ on it is pristine. Never been played.

Not a great episode overall. I like the teaser of the Enterprise finding a duplicate Earth, though. I wish that THAT was the plot thread that they followed for the rest of the episode.

Miri was shown in the UK in 1970 and then banned for nearly twenty five years!!! Yet I think it's a great episode myself although the annoyingly brutal kids at the end are a lot to stomach! It has that Walking Dead vibe and the search for immortality which caused the outbreak among the population of this planet would be used again in other media but the only point of negativity I have is yes, why is the planet a duplicate earth which isn't really explored apart from the opening teaser!!! :brickwall:

It's got the weird S1 vibe that's different from the other 2.5 seasons. I like that. Kim Darby good, Pollan seems too old, and his squeaky voice bugs me.
