Minefield and Dead Stop Observations *Spoilers Maybe*

Rear Admiral

I think the fact that some time has past since ENT was on the air, including the fact we just had a new Star Trek film (with new blood) released, and the fact that we have TrekLit going in an interesting direction...I (and maybe some others) look at ENT in a different light.

I might as well say: My proposal for Simon and Schuster is based in the ENT universe. [That is all you will hear me say about it from now on].

Minefield
Minefield is a good Malcolm Reed episode, and a good lead in to the next episode. We get to know a little about him; I like the chemistry between him and Archer...

Of course, T'Pol looked sexy as always. (However, a question is still why do they have her in that silly bowl cut!)

Ooo, on the other hand....Hoshi looked sexy with her hair all in disarray....(At least they allowed Hoshi let her hair out!)...

It was cool seeing some early Romulan warbirds...and T'Pol's reaction to the name Romulans...(which we probably will learn more in later episodes).

Hmmm, think, a ENT version of The Enterprise Incident with Hoshi and T'Pol going covert on a Romulan vessel, dressed in uniforms similar to the Joanne Linville Romulan Commander....

*rooowr*

Of course, they are NOT wearing those stupid bowl cuts...

*a moment of silence as we all ponder that visual of Hoshi and T'Pol walking the corridors as Romulans....in those uniforms...*

Gorgeous...

...But...

....We remember that the people of this century haven't seen Romulans....and will not see them...yada yada yada...:shifty:

...Well, that fantasy was good while it lasted...!:)

Anyway...!

I wanted to make a note that Travis does a 'Troi' in this episode, but I may be able to make an opposing argument on his 'Troi-isms':

1. When the ENT is hit, he comments--right after--that something hit them on the port side...(Wouldn't they have already 'felt' where they were hit?)

However, the captain probably wouldn't have known exactly where if the jolt suddenly occurred out of nowhere. Hence, the reason why Mayweather gave a reading on the direct hits, which may also be protocol.

2. When the Romulans hail the ENT, Travis states 'They're hailing us...'...

If it was anyone else on the ship, it would probably be a name of the person transmitting (or department)...i.e. 'Sickbay to bridge' or 'Engineering to bridge'...or 'Anderson to bridge'. However, no one not monitoring transmissions wouldn't know by the TOS beep where that transmission was coming from, soooo....

Soooo, technically, even though it seems like Travis is being affected by the Troi-spirit, he is following protocol; but, watching this episode initially, I kept asking myself, 'Why is he stating the obvious?'

Whoever wrote this was paying attention to details...Bravo.

Dead Stop
It's interesting that I read some comments on how Travis doesn't get to do anything, that he is a token character; of course, some comments are probably just people who dislike the character for whatever reason; whatever those reasons are, everyone has their likes and dislikes. [I know I have characters in the Trek franchise that don't interest me, but may interest others].

I think Travis has had two episodes (?) based primarily on his character: Horizon, which I still need to see...and another; this episode--Dead Stop-- seems to be based around him.

He seems to give the female fans an eyeview as well in certain scenes.... (I don't think I need to elaborate).

And speaking of females, at least onscreen, he has lunch with Hoshi...and later on has her coming into sickbay to cry her heart out and begin reminiscing about 'happier' times when she thinks he is dead!

Don't get me wrong, there could probably be more for the character, but he wasn't that bad off as some would make it out. [Again, I think it's some who dislike the character bad-mouthing the character].

I'm actually in the midst of watching Stormfront, and the guy does get around; there seems to be a certain protective feelings towards Travis coming from Archer, T'Pol...[If I remember correctly Trip, in this episode in particular, has some protective feelings].

To repeat: Don't get me wrong, every character can be expanded upon; being that Travis is one of my favorite characters on ENT, I welcome stories about the character...and stories where he is away from the helm.

Sidenote: We learn that he is 26 at this time; in These are the Voyages, he is 35 years old....and he is STILL an Ensign...?

I digress.

Aside from Travis...I like other elements that added to the way this episode was put together: The enigmatic alien/machine ship...the fact that it kidnaps choice crewmembers of passing vessels, to power it using neurological means, and we never know where exactly this vessel came from. Only that it is repairing itself, to continue what it has been doing.

This kind of harks back to those movies in the 70s where you had a computer that was supposedly benign, and it turns out to have some other plans in it's network. Furthermore, this reminds me of the probe from Star Trek IV; we never learn that probe came from, only that it needs a song that whales can mimic....

Even though I don't like the way Archer handles himself in certain times, I found it a bit amusing when he is trying to get answers at one point, and hits the computer screen in frustration. The computer--like those 70s films--is shot in way that Archer's reaction is being watched from the computer's pov.

Both Minefield and Dead Stop were well-written episodes; so far, they are my top ENT episodes.

I know there are others later on in the show that may garner my interest, especially episodes heavy in TOS elements; so, that list of favorites may grow.
