Re: Michael Giacchino Gets NINE Nods from International Film Music Awa

I unabashedly loved Giacchino's work in both Star Trek and Up. Not just during the opening Kelvin sequence or the "Married Life" montage in Up (both made me cry by the way, in no small part thanks to his music). The music during Sulu's swordfight on the drill platform is so bombastic (and so reminiscent of the music during Kirk and Spocks fight in Amok Time) it fills me with giddy joy just thinking about it.

Each and every nomination here for Giacchino is well deserved.

For television, however, I have to go with Bear McCreary's Battlestar Galactica work.

Yeah, I definitely agree, though I'm certainly pulling for Giacchino in the other nominations.

Re: Michael Giacchino Gets NINE Nods from International Film Music Awa

I've heard mixed reviews of Giacchino's Star Trek score from film score collectors. While I don't think that the score was the best of the Trek installments, I am not as critical as some seem to be. In fact, I've had his Trek theme in my head since I heard it (not continuously, thank goodness, but I probably hear it in my noggin at least once every day or two).

I think that he really hit all the right notes (pun intended) in 'Hella Bartalk', from Pike's "I dare you" speech through Kirk riding into the shipyard to enlist. The track shifts effortlessly from Kirk's guilt (over being an underachiever) and grief (from never having known his father) to Kirk's determination as he chooses to enter Starfleet. It's quite beautiful.

In 'Labor of Love', I honestly think that the score made the scene. The Kelvin and George Kirk were flying to their deaths, sacrificing themselves for the crew and Winona Kirk, but rather than go for a heroic, bombastic score at that moment, Giacchino chose a tragic, romantic theme which would have been equally appropriate for a love scene (which in a very real way is what that scene really was). In the film, no matter how many times I've seen it, the music and acting brings tears to my eyes. There hasn't been a trek score (and scene) to do that since Horner scored Spock's sacrifice in TWOK (okay, maybe a little when Data died, I'll admit).

The Spock / Vulcan theme was nice, although a little understated. In 'That New Car Smell', Giacchino does an excellent job of mixing the exotic Vulcan theme with a counterpoint of the 'Labor of Love' theme (the Human theme?), which, rather than jar the listener, only serves to emphasize the harmony of Vulcan and Human within Spock.

Later in that track, the Kirk theme swaggers through. I can't say strongly enough how much I love that swagger. It really made Chris Pine finally 'become' Kirk for me, because it evoked that little grin and head waggle that Shatner used to bring to young Kirk sometimes.

Finally, it was sort of nice to hear the orchestral treatment for the TOS theme; but, honestly, I wasn't all that taken with it. Maybe it's because I've heard it so many times, but I'm a little bored with it. I also felt that the manner in which Giacchino juxtaposed the TOS theme with his film themes was a little forced.

8/10

^Umm... No. I found Caprica to be less than interesting for me. I loved the BSG mini-series and finale episode, but felt it was too much soap opera (miss an episode and I am lost).

I agree that Giacchino deservs all the accolades he has received and wish him well.
