Message in a Bottle

Kilana2

Vice Admiral
Admiral
...aka Flaschenpost in the German translation.

One of my favorite episodes. It's a crying shame that Andy Dick didn't have another appearance. As nuisance for Beverly Crusher or Doc Bashir for instance.
He almost stole the Docter the show.

Now it's time to sound off about this episode.......:D

I really like the episode, though I've been given to understand that this is one of Andy Dick's more restrained performances. I hadn't really heard of him prior to this.

Robert Picardo has often spoken about how he was surprised to find out that the Doctor had had sex before. As far as I remember he even wrote something about it - I'm not sure if it was a proper piece of fiction like a short story - or was it more like an analysis of the situaton? I might be wrong but I have vague memories of his mentioning this before.

Kilana2, wallpapers for this episode are lined up but I might not get to them earlier than next year.
BTW, let me know if you can find some good (close-up) shots of Weyoun.

I remember how ridiculously exciting it felt at the time to see a Voyager character interacting with the Alpha Quadrant. Things like EMH2 mentioning the Dominion War were like manna from heaven back in those days. :)

Whenever there's a Message in the Bottle thread, I mention the same things:-

1) In Life line, Zimmerman says he's been checked by the Mark III and Mark IV (which would suggest the poor old Andy Dick model very quickly became obsolete).
2) The gaff when the EMH is sent through the buffer to the Alpha quadrant with his mobile emitter still attached (it should drop to the floor).
3) And most importantly (worthy of derailing the thread) the doctor's fully functioning penis.

A question for the ladies: If you were in bed with a man and he said..."computer, attach penis"... would that spoil the mood for you?

...aka Flaschenpost in the German translation.

In many ways, the episode is about a man flashing his post.

Message in a Bottle was Season Four. Before that, the Doc had plenty of chances that we know about, and no doubt more off screen, especially as he was restricted to sick bay and the holodeck.

He possibly got together with Freya from Heroes and Demons in Season One.

Lifesigns was season Two. I'd always imagined the Doc got with Denara Pel. Sandrine was all over him in Twisted, also in Season Two.

Real Life
was in Season Three. He didn't consumate his marriage but went straight to parenthood? Ha ha, real life don't work that way.

I love Message in a Bottle for the USS Prometheus. She's a beauty.

I enjoyed this episode but like Hux wondered about the emmiter.

Unlike others I am not the least bit interested in the Doctor's love life.

For those who don't know Andy Dick was a man who obviously had talent he also had very extreme personal problems. I don't want to get into it here but you can look his story up on Wikipedia. That's probably one of the reasons we never saw him again.

I know this isn't canon but I think I remember reading in one of the books Doctor Crusher made use of a EMH during a refugee crisis (Losing the Peace) and her EMH happened to be female. I believe it was that book but if not I do remember reading it somewhere.

I remember reading something about Crusher dealing with a female EMH. Was it Greater than the Sum? That's what I've read recently.

What I really dislike with "Message In A Bottle" is that it ruined the main premise of the series.

The starship Voyager was supposed to be lost in the Delta Quadrant and no one on Earth did know anything about it.

Then all of a sudden they can contact Starfleet Headquarters as easy as if they were phoning from Los Angeles to San Francisco and holograms start jumping from one ship to another.

Message in a bottle happened too early in the run. Contact with the Federation should have been saved for the start of season six at the earliest.

I liked the episode because we got to see a new Federation class starship Prometheus complete with a newer EMH.

I have no problem with that, as it was a one-time communication only, made possible only because the crew had a lot of luck in finding that abandoned alien array. IIRC, they didn't re-establish contact with Starfleet for 2 years after that (Pathfinder, halfway season 6).

Yeah, but I'm one of those people who really wanted the crew to genuinely believe that they would be travelling for decades before ever making contact with the Federation. That they would have relationships, children and build a real community.

None of that happened, of course and once message in a bottle happened, it basically just became TNG: The Delta quadrant mission.

I didn't mind it. The fact that Stafleet knew they were out there led them to start looking for them which led to the Pathfinder project. It also gave Barkley something to obsess over for a few years. It was...gasp...continuity!

I just remember it was one of those post Destiny novels.

I'm okay with MiaB occurring when it does. Hell, if anything I'd say "Eye of the Needle" happened too early in the series. By season four of what was presumably going to be a seven season series, I didn't mind Our Heroes being given a morale boost. Especially as that communication method is basically just a one-shot while also setting up some additional plot threads that I think pay off well.

Your wish etc :D You should now be reading this in the Voyager forum :techman:
What's this? A moderator from Middle Earth? I didn't know that fantasy characters could be bumped into on a sci-fi forum. Have you lost your way? :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:
On a somewhat more serious note, may I ask if there are any LOTR/Hobbit/Tolkien fora on this site?

I'm a Tolkien fan...way back before it was cool. ;)
