Merle Haggard Has Died

One of the last real country music artists. Today's country is overglorified pop.

In the 70's, Chicago had two good AM stations, one Top-40 & one country. I listened to both, but that was pretty much the last time I listened to country.

If you listen to what Country sounded like in the '60s before the Bakersfield Sound hit, well, thank god for Merle and Buck Owens. I saw him a number of times, starting around 1990, and he was a commanding force onstage even in his older years. Great pure voice, enthusiastic fiddler and a nice understated melodic lead guitar style. And as a songwriter, maybe the best since Hank Williams. Another legend... slowly fading out of sight.

I didn't appreciate Merle until I got older and I'm sad to hear he's passed. Sucks, Willie and Merle played around here but I didn't find out until last minute and didn't have anyone to go with. I regret not going to that now but it's kind of awkward going alone to these things.
