Got this message when trying to access Memory Alpha
Web Shield has detected a variety of malicious items on memory-alpha.fandom.com that might attempt to install harmful programs on your computer that can modify and delete your files, change your browser settings, or steal information (i.e. photos, passwords, messages, credit cards).
Anyone else encounter this?

I just tried it, no warning (Chrome).

I got a similar warning on my desktop recently (Safari) and have been using my phone for access to the site. Not sure whether I should make an exception for it or wait til it sorts itself out.

Cardassians?

From a production standpoint, there is often more information about Star Trek on Wikipedia than on Memory Alpha anyway.

It’s a shit show of a site and I haven’t been using it regularly since they started getting pissy about gender pronouns back when DSC S03 was airing.

I made an exception for it. There doesn't seem to be a problem for many others and the site works fine on my phone. Dunno what the pronoun thing is, but it's still the best resource for in-universe information that I can find. Here's hoping.

Yeah the ads make those sites (Alpha and Beta) unusable.

TrekBBS has started down a similar path in recent weeks.

There was some resistance to using the ‘they’ pronoun for Gray and furthermore for Ian Alexander the actor.

There was a minor kerfuffle and they relented under pressure finally, but they didn’t want to.

Whatever I guess.

No problem, Firefox.

If I didn't watch or read people who I don't agree with, I would be staring at a blank wall alot..

Must be an AVG Secure Browser thing then. I'm not getting the message on Chrome, either.
I used to have AVG and, yes, it caused a lot of problems. There are a lot of issues with it (as well as Avast), ranging from spurious false positives, to high CPU resource usage, to pinging the meter on HD access and R/W times, to allegations of becoming spyware themselves, monitoring, downloading and selling browser and other user data to unknown third parties. It abuses its full and unrestricted access to this personal data by virtue of being a virus/malware scanner, operating at the deepest level of the OS kernel. This is highly unethical.

Some articles & conversations on the subject:
Granted, they're pretty old (2015-2018), some a little more recent (2020), but many issues have been known about and well documented with these tools for some time now. I wouldn't trust Mcafee or Norton's anymore, etiher.

Windows Defender works fine. It's integrated and optimized with the OS and takes a LOT less CPU resources than the others. It's saved me from a number of malicious files since I made the switch, which tells me that it is actually working. I have since uninstalled AVG and gone exclusively to WD. Since we already know that Microsoft has full access to all your software and data on all Windows-based machines anyway, we can at least ameliorate the data spillage and limit it to one demonic company, as opposed to multiple ones.

I tried editing entries to include photos of Samuel Peeples and Ernest Haller, but had them deleted. The 'correct' way to do it was so complicated, I gave up.

You guys have me thinking about my own firewall. Do people have a favorite for their Mac?

I haven't used a Mac in a long time, but I did for many years back in the 90's, 00's and early 10's. MacOS has a built-in firewall capability that can be turned on and configured very easily. I recommend you go with that for the same reasons that I use Windows Defender and have jettisoned all 3rd party virus scanners: Low overhead and high-availability.
