Mean old chicks in DS9..........

Mr. Scott

Commander
I have always thought of Louise Fletcher as being an odd choice to be on a Star Trek series. I don't know why, but I have always seen her as Nurse Ratched and nothing else.

I wonder when the role of Kai Winn was being developed, was there a brainstorming session on who could play this role? First, she has to be a woman of "a certain age" who played a lot of bitches, especially passive/agressive types, and she came to mind.

I doubt that he would do it, or want too much money, but it would have been cool to cast Jack Nicholson as a Pah-Wraith who ends up killing Kai Winn by banging strangulation and then inhabiting the soul of Dukat only to kill it in the fire cave. That would have been totally ass awesome.

I wonder if Louise Fletcher and Salome Jens changed roles, could they do each other's role justice? One thing that was interesting about this show was that the two major antagonists were played by post menopausal women.

Lastly (yes, I am drinking Tellerite Beer), if Joan Crawford and Bette Davis were to be cast as the Female Shapeshifter and Kai Winn, who would get the roles? I prefer Bette as the Shapeshifter. Any opinions?

I thought that LF did a great job as Kai Winn, she's really good actress. I think Salome Jens... isn't all that old?

Either way, I thought the casting was good... I don't feel either has been all that typecast.

Louise Fletcher is easily one of the best actresses ever cast in any Trek show or movie. There are very few members of the main cast who can hold a candle to her in terms of acting skill, except perhaps a few likewise great actors such as Nimoy, Shimerman, and Auberjonois. DS9 and Trek as a whole is very fortunate to have had her. The only bad part is that she was shamefully under-used. They should have cut the budget of useless, inherently annoying characters like Keiko O'Brien, and instead given all that money to fund more Winn/Fletcher appearances.

btw, is this supposed to be a serious thread?

Who said that Winn had to be a woman of a "certain age?" It seems like you are making up that idea in your own head, not getting it from any of the DS9 showrunners' thoughts.

You are not their doctors, so how do you know that? Also, what relevance does that have to their roles on the show? -none, really.

In response to both Marie1 and Navaros questioning the assertion regarding Salome Jens:

She was born in the 1930s. I think it's safe to assume she's post-menopausal.

Bette as Kai Winn, Joan as the Shapeshifter. ;)

Kai Winn is one of the best characters ever in Trek...

Louise Fletcher brought so much to the character, she has this ability to make you rage with her constant battering of Sisko's character and his status as Emissary, while she can also make you emphasise with her within a split second...

If anything though, the "Mean Old Chicks" was a TNG staple, countless Admirals fitted this description and they always seemed to treat Picard like a dunce, even though he was practically holding the Federation together

This is the best question I've ever seen in the history of TrekBBS! :rommie:

After much consideration and flipping back and forth, I gotta go with Crawford as the Female Changeling, due to that psycho-frigid persona, a painted harpy who will savagely seduce poor innocent Odo, played by Tony Perkins. Davis' slutty-hypocrite persona is a better fit for the Kai, who we all know is just putting on those saintly airs of hers. All it will take is one wink from Dukat/Anjohl (played by a strapping Burt Lancaster) and she'll fall right into his arms...

Star Trek
