May Challenge; Letter to Mathew Weer

(This was a letter I had written for the story but never got around to actually putting it into an episode of EXODUS or the other stories. It's just a small passage from a larger 'part'. But I think it fits well here. I reworked it as an continuation of the story where we left off with the Weers)

STAR TREK
A FAMILY CALLED; WEER

Mathew Weer was in the Tempest, on his way to find his long lost love, Camine McCord. He had thought her to be dead for years, unaware that the child she gave birth to, and pretended to be another man’s, was in fact his. While stopping over at Deep Space Nine, and enjoying a beer at Morn’s, Mathew received and old piece of snail mail that had taken four years to find its way to Mathew’s hands.

It had been written by his brother Jonathan, who had died while defending Earth during the traditionalist war. Mathew opened the old style envelope and began to read the letter with in.

Mat, I am sending you this letter because I am not sure where Mary and the kids will be at this time. For all I know they have left Nemra IV. Please see this gets to them. I have included a note for you at the bottom.

Jonathan

Dear Mary

I am not sure how long it will take this letter to get to you and the kids. I just wanted you all to know that I miss you very much. I received word that you have decided to take up residence on Nemra IV until I can join up with you again. I have something I want to say about that.

If this Traditionalist War stretches on for too long, I want you to leave Nemra IV and head to Droanha with my brother, Mathew. I know you will protest, and want to stay there until I get back, but please do as I ask. Mathew has told me often about the land he has purchased o Droanha. I think you will all enjoy yourselves there until I meet up with you.

I made it to my parent’s house in Montana. Apparently they were both killed in a fire not long after we left. Traditionalist forces attacked that area on Montana and inflicted much damage. I have been asked, due to my old billet when I was in Starfleet, to assist with the supply effort here on Earth. I have decided to help them, and so it is for that reason I want you all to go on and not wait for me on Nemra IV.

I want to say some words to each of the kids;

Mitch
You are a man now, and with being a man, comes new responsibilities. Since my brother, your uncle Mathew, is always a lot, I expect you to be the man of the house. I do not want you coming to Earth to find me, as I am sure you want to do. Just stay there and help your mother. You are, for all intents and purposes, the man of the house.

Ramada
Your beauty is undeniable honey. Your mom and I are so proud of you, and how you have worked hard for your education and helping those who are in need. Somehow I know you have it inside of yourself to be a wonderful wife to a lucky man someday. Just don’t jump in to marriage too fast. Give love time, that’s the best love can ask for.

Ginny and Lawrence.
You both may be twins, but I am so proud how you have each grown up into two very different young people.

Lawrence
I know you have a lot of pride, like your Uncle Mathew. But with such a drive to make sure things are right in the world, may come sacrifices that may keep you from the finer things of life; like a wife and kids of your own. Don’t let your idealism steal you of that. I am sure Uncle Mat would agree!

Ginny
You are as pig headed as your Uncle Mat. I remember when you gave that boy a bloody nose in the first grade because he called you’re a bitch. Well, you can’t go around hitting everyone. I remember giving that advice to Mathew, but he didn’t seem to listen either.

Mathew
I am sure as you read this letter you must realize why I am writing it. I am not too confident I will be going home, ever again, Mathew. You have been a great younger brother, and I am so proud, as were mom and dad, at the life you have lived. When ever your older brother, yes me, was scared he would always know that his younger brother was ready to come home and kick the bad guy’s ass, or something crazy like that. You take care.

Farewell, love always.
Jonathan Weer

Mathew finished his beer, and folded up the letter. He would give it Jonathan’s surviving kids at a later date. He headed for the docking ring, and from there, he would head out to find Camine Harris/Devoghe

Hey, not bad. Not bad at all. A bittersweet wrapping up of one man's life. Good job.

A poignant story, indeed. There's always something bitter-sweet about finding old, undelivered letters to people long-gone.

A very poignant tale. Letters such as this say so much--and yet it's never really enough.

Yes, they are. Kind of like Kirk's last message to Spock/McCoy in THOLIAN WEB. It was supposed to be his last message to them, but so much was left unsaid. But, of course, he came back...

There is nothing quite as depressing as a letter from a person who has already passed away. I liked this, it was a nicely written fond farewell.

I do have one point of criticism though. Clearly Jonathan knew he was not going to make it but for his family's sake he wanted to keep the impression that he would come back. If that's the case he really shouldn't have told Matthew that he didn't think he was going to come back within the same letter to his wife and kids. He could have done that instead on the note that came with the letter.

Otherwise a very good entry.

Given that this is Trek I found it a bit off-putting that Jonathan thinks getting married and having a family is the most important thing for his daughter has to aspire to. But maybe that fits in with your created universe.

I particularly liked the fact that receiving the letter doesn't make Mathew change his plans. It shows the single-minded purpose that I also got from Jonathan's descriptions of Mathew to his children.

I found the way you revealed that there has been a tragedy for Mary and the children just as an aside to Mat's decision not to go and visit them (Mary and some of the children must be dead since Mat thinks of the surviving children) was incredibly tragic. Much more powerful than if you'd made a big deal of it.

A great story.

A great story.

Someday I hope to pick up with Mathew Weer..I liked him alot. I grew up watching a show called HOW THE WEST WAS WON with James Arness, and I based Mathew Weer on Zeb Macahan, the James Arness character...

Thanks for the kind words!!!
