May 2008 Challenge - Mail Call

trampledamage

Admiral
Letters of thanks, letters from banks,
Letters of joy from the girl and the boy,
Receipted bills and invitations
To inspect new stock or visit relations,
And applications for situations
And timid lovers' declarations
And gossip, gossip from all the nations,
News circumstantial, news financial,
Letters with holiday snaps to enlarge in,
Letters with faces scrawled in the margin,
Letters from uncles, cousins, and aunts,
Letters to Scotland from the South of France,
Letters of condolence to Highlands and Lowlands
Notes from overseas to Hebrides
Written on paper of every hue,
The pink, the violet, the white and the blue,
The chatty, the catty, the boring, adoring,
The cold and official and the heart's outpouring,
Clever, stupid, short and long,
The typed and the printed and the spelt all wrong.
from Night Mail by W.H. Auden

In honour of my sister who helped me think of fun diseases for the last challenge, this month's challenge is "Mail Call".

Letters from home, letters to a ship, official reports back to headquarters. It can be whatever you want - but it has to feature communication by mail (recorded video feed -or whatever they actually call it in Trek - is allowed :) )

I've gone through the winning entries and I don't see this anywhere - but I know there are some missing. So if this has been done before let me know and I'll give you plan B.

So, the details:
Challenge Title: Mail Call
Story length: 2,000
Allowable characters: Anyone / any time so long as it's the Trek universe
Closing Date: 29th May and I'll start the voting on the 30th.

Any questions, shout out.

2000 words-a little tight but cool. I'm going to slam dunk this-don't expect my entry for a while.:)

Easy peasy, I write my 500 stories as log entries anyway. All I have to do is have Turner send one...or receive one...hmmm

Quick question: what is the limits on the framing device? Does the whole thing have to be the 'mail' or is there room for stuff like "Jane woke up and found a letter waiting for her." ?

From what I understand about the challenges, they're pretty free-form so long as you address the general theme of the challenge. So, yeah, it seems as though it can be any form of long distance, non-real-time communication.

There's room for as much framing as you think the story needs - I just want letters / recorded messages to play a key part.

Oh, I think you picked a good one TD-I'm sure everyone is just percolating ideas right now.

My MAIL CALL post can be found her. A FAMILY CALLED: WEER. It is a reworked letter I was going to have Mathew read in an earlier episode of EXODUS, but never got around to posting. I have reworked it for this challenge. Nothing classic, but it does have a connection to the Weer Epic, so I like that.

*lightbulb turns on above her head*

I think I have an idea of how I can tie this challenge theme into the big fic I'm writing!

I have submitted a second entry this month. I didn't have to time to finish a complete episode of FRANK GRAYSON's ENTERPRISE this weekend while on vacation at Grand Canyon and Vegas, so I decided on writing this short story. I had planned to talk about this 'letter' in passing, but went ahead and did more for the letter. It is a bonus episode and takes place between 2 and 3...3 will be the heroric escape, or death, of Hank Morton, his wife Nancy, and Leonard Jackson and his wife Rayana...stay tuned..

But here is the letter from Kurt Morton. He is Hank's son. Kurt died while on deployment in the Iraq War.

Cool.

You need to pick which story you want to be your official entry though - any time before the closing date is fine.
