Maverisms's WIPs

The ship seems larger now. I like the thin nacelles. Heck, the battle-section alone is fine as a complete ship. It has a great front 3/4 view now. It looks newer than Grandeur to me. There are lots of surfaces, details that would be hidden one moment, revealed the next in a beauty shot of her passing. Very dynamic.

Any chance of a variant of this design in which you completely delete the secondary hull, keep the saucer and its overhead module, but attach the nacelles under the saucer a-la the Miranda-Class?

Yes!

One of the reason I keep stepping backward on the modeling is to find the most economic way to "modularize" the component part of the mesh. I don't plan to kitbash with it so much as I had always planned on designing the "Reliant" to the Renown's "Enterprise."

Right now I'm thinking of expanding the warp ring laterally and attaching it to the saucer with short spars, ala Rademaker's Merian class design. I think that would better lend itself to the "light explorer" variant I have in mind and simplify the overall design. I think you'll be seeing that "Miranda" version relatively soon.

I'm also thinking about upsizing the mission pod a bit, and developing a few alternative designs, to stress the modular nature of that feature. Part of me wants to emplace phaser cannons in the ring, but it is already doing triple duty as a support structure, transit way and drive system, and these ships aren't warships.

After much experimenting and research, I've settled on how to do the detailing. Which, of course, hasn't been done yet. I needed to optimize the mesh to handle the new plan, and that meant rebuilding. Again.

Only minor changes to the battle section. Rebuilt the saucer and warp ring. Still need to optimize the bridge module. Made the saucer's nav deflector larger.

Next step, Escape pods.

Took a little detour, for giggles.

Criticisms? I'll entertain all suggestions.

Tell the truth, now. You knew this picture was coming...

I think she came out well for a preliminary. I like how the pylons look like wings sweeping downwards, and blends in pretty well with the roll-bar, though I doubt that she would use the same rollbar, since for the heavy cruiser design, that acts as a warp drive. Unless the rollbar is supposed to be an auxiliary warp drive, I would suggest making a unique rollbar engineered for carrying armaments when the time comes.

To me, the nacelles look a little too big from the front-side perspective, though.

I've pondered using a different nacelle lay out, but I also want to keep the history intact. Miranda and Nebula don't swap out nacelles. The roll bar isn't the same one on the Renown. The differences are slight, I admit. Right now, it's a place holder, though I don't plan to change the geometry of the bar much. I do plan a different mission bod, though. And I doubt the pod will fit exactly.

I might retrofit the design into the Renown, as an optional variant pod. If I do, the results might help show some of the differences between the roll bar, and Renown's Warp ring.

I love the Reliant-inspired detour. Very fluid. The detail on the top of the secondary hull, either aft weapons or exhaust ports, is refreshing. It goes beyond the refit detail and shows more power. I have often wanted to see more detail on secondary hull designs. I liked Gabe's idea for the TOS Enterprise that many mistook for the JJprise, though his type of detail would look better on a flatter secondary hull similar to yours.

Ass that to the stacked saucer motif we saw in the Diplomatic vessel thread, and you the added complexity one expects to see post TNG.
