Matt Smith writes DW fanfic

I bet there'll be some demand to see these in print. My guess is they'll turn up in the Christmas advent calendar feature on the BBC's website.

Unless he came up with some cool ideas, in which case we could see the very first Doctor-written episode. Now wouldn't that be cool.

I remember when Smith was first signed there were concerns about him not being familiar enough with the character, etc. But it sounds like he really took the job seriously. He had my respect when, according to Moffat, he went nuts for Patrick Troughton's Tomb of the Cybermen.

Judging by the comments that he made while he was being interviewed by Wossy, he wasn't familiar with the plot of Human Nature/Family of Blood -- had he forgot or was it a subtle joke?

For those of us who missed that interview, could you elaborate?

From my (hazy) memory, Jonathan Ross asked MS about the time when the Doctor lost his memory. MS said that he didn't recall that happening. It gave me the impression that he wasn't that familiar as new Dr Who as the real fan boys, that he was making a subtle joke that Ross didn't get, or maybe he's normal enough not to have committed the plot points and names of all 100+ serials (new and old) to memory. I'm more worried that I knew what Ross was probably referring to given that I'm only a casual viewer.

I think it's established fact by now that Matt Smith isn't half the fanboy Tennant is. Smith also said 'he wanted to feel like Doctor Who' in the article. Ouch. :p

Well Smith grew up more as a Footballer than a Who fan with their sonic screwdriver.

He's only two years older than me. So if I had to guess he missed the classic series aswell. Then probably took a glance at the 2005 series.

Ok, he was asked about the time that the Doctor lost his memory, and he says he doesn't remember that, and you guys aren't sure that it was supposed to be a joke?????

Having watched the interview on YouTube, the host briefly confuses Smith because they are talking about David Tennant, the actor, and the host refers to "him" when he mentions the losing memory bit. Smith thinks he's talking about Tennant, but only for a brief moment. And even then, the point of the questions and stuff wasn't centered on that episode, only used in reference as to the wide range of avenues an actor can have playing The Doctor. They never returned to remark about whether Smith remembered the particular episode, or not...

Well, not being a major fan the way Tennant was doesn't mean he won't be able to serve the role well, or that he won't have become a fan by the time he's done. Goodness knows they've made a lot of to-do about the fact that he became such a big fan of Tomb of the Cybermen before starting.

And Steven Moffat calls him "Doctor Who," too, y'know. ;)

Smith said he grew up on the dark age where there was no WHO on UK TV. Like me, I think he got into the show in 2005 and probably hes not like us and doesn't re watch it so he probably is a little fuzzy remembering everything plus his mind is probably full of learning lines for the new eps ;)

Everything I've seen so far hints hes going to be a good DOCTOR.

Yes, I know that. An actor being such a fan of the series he's part of beforehand like Tennant is pretty rare, I think. I imagine it could even be an obstacle. In any case, what matters is the acting.

He used to post on Outpost Gallifrey's old Doctor Who Forum, and in one of this posts, he defended the practice of referring to the character as "Doctor Who" when speaking of the character in an out-universe POV.

It is how the character was credited for the majority of the classic series (and one season of the new).

And sometimes the writers forgot that that wasn't the character's name, like in The War Machines where the computer calls him 'Doctor Who'. Still, the character is called 'The Doctor'. And while it might be less confusing to people who are really unfamiliar with the show to call him Doctor Who (I did so occasionally, too, when explaining the show to my Mum, who promptly referred to the Doctor as 'Mr Who' ;)), it makes me cringe every time I hear it.
