New Doctor Matt Smith is simply "the best", according to Steven Moffat, head writer of the 2010 series of Dr Who. Smith, who is the 11th actor to play the Time Lord on TV, will take over from David Tennant in the lead role of the long-running show next year.
Dr Who is one of the BBC's most popular shows, and Moffat is under a lot of pressure to continue its success.
"What if I broke Doctor Who? That would be a tragedy," he said at the 2009 Screenwriters' Festival in Cheltenham.
"Yes, you do feel [the] pressure," he added.
Filming began in July on the new series of the time travel saga.
Biggest challenge
Moffat who is writing six of the episodes and overseeing another seven, promised fans "great stories" and said there would "joyous moments" as well as "heartbreak".
The screenwriter is currently working on the script for the climax to the series for which expectations will be huge.
"[My] biggest challenge right now is the writing of Episode 13," he confessed.
But he had nothing but praise for Matt Smith - at 27 the youngest actor ever to play the 900-year-old Time Lord.
"He's all the things you'd expect, including ancient," he revealed, describing the new Doctor as "someone you can't take your eyes off".
It's not only the Doctor who'll have regenerated in the new series. The Tardis has also undergone a significant makeover.
"There is a plot reason for it," Moffat confirmed.

"I always liked the Tardis from the Peter Cushing [Dr Who] movies, and wanted to make it more like that".
Moffat, whose TV work includes Press Gang and Coupling, has written for Doctor Who since it returned to TV screens four years ago.
He penned the episode Blink, featuring killer stone statues, which fans recently voted the second-best Dr Who episode, in a poll conducted by Dr Who Magazine.
The Waters of Mars, the first of David Tennant's final three adventures, will be broadcast in November.
His final story, The End of Time, in which he will regenerate into Matt Smith's Doctor, has yet to be scheduled, but is expected to air at the end of 2009 or very early in 2010.

I like the bit about the Cushing stuff, i personally love those movies and have no issue with fitting Cushing's Who into my own personal who canon.

I am a bit confused about the end bit about Tennents last story, i assumed that would be aired over the xmas period as the xmas special in two parts, i take it the 2010 bit is wrong?

The general assumption is that part 2 will likely air on New Year's Day, though it's possible they may choose a later date. The BBC has not confirmed that part 1 will actually air on Christmas Day. In fact the announcement that Tennant's Hamlet film will air that day might actually suggest not. As usual we won't know until closer to the date. They could just as easily put part 1 on as a New Year's Eve special followed by Part 2 on New Year's Day. Or air Part 2 sometime later in January if there's one of those UK-exclusive bank holidays.

Or if they really want to spell out Tennant's era, they could decide to air the finale at Easter or something. That sounds nutty, but BBC Books has announced a Tenth Doctor novel being published in March...

I liked the video with DT and RTD.

Quite psyched for new Who over the couple of months.

UK exclusive bank holidays? After New Years Day the next BH in the UK would be Good Friday.

I just read Matt Smith is 27.

Why the fuck are people crying that he's too young?

He is 27 not a child.

I do look forward to the new era of Who under Moffat & Smith though will need selling on the new companion they seem to be sexing her up a little bit too much for a family show (based off ever pic I see with her wearing small shorts .)

Christmas Day & New Year's Day are going to set massive ratings records with the majorty of the UK TV viewing public probably virtually all watching.

He's making even us young farts (i.e. people like me) feel old. The Doctor younger than me? What the fuck?!

Seriously, I don't have a problem with him being that young. I got a huge Patrick Troughton vibe from the pictures I've seen and read. If so, while he might be young, he'll still give the ancient feeling (just as Moffat said in this article).

I agree...I think that it will be interesting to see how they deal with an externally young but mentally very old character through this season...I hope that the look that we've got thus far for the 11th shows that he'll be the "Curmudgeonly Genius In The Body Of A Young Man"...almost like the First Doc's personality is in the body of the Eleventh's...

I'm 40 next week just about everyone on tv is younger than me.

I hope this too, I think 11 is shaping up nicely.

I don't mind him being young, it's not like they haven't had young actors before, they have, Davison was only 29 when he played The Doctor. But it has been generally trending further towards younger, hipper actors with each incarnation since they restarted it.

I just don't want to see it becoming a requirement that he be young and cool. But with the way the attitudes of the target demo has changed in the last few decades, I can see it going that way.

I defintely agree with that sentiment. While I recognize (although I don't like it) that we won't see a much older actor like Bill Nighy playing The Doctor, I don't want all of the remaining incarnations of The Doctor be young.

Well I'm a big fan of the original shows and Doctors, and I don't really mind the younger and hipper trend.

We've already seen every variation of an older Doctor by now (and even Davison's Doc acted older than he looked). I think it's kind of refreshing to get to explore a couple younger ones now.

Besides, judging by the way the 11th is dressing, he can't be all THAT cool and hip. lol

It could be that the apparent age after regeneration is somewhat dependent on the apparent age prior to regeneration. It would make sense for the result to skew younger in most cases. Not always, though.....a probability thing.

I like the sound of "joyous moments" and "heartache". That sounds like my kind of stuff. As for Smith being "the best", I'm reserving judgement on that til I've seen him in action. I like what I've seen so far. Unlike most other folks here, though, I can't say I've really taken to his new assistant. Still, give her time.
